Thank you Kerry for your help with my intake valve question. On the same '49EL I have a question on the carb. The front side says 1 1/2 MOD M 2-418. The back side says L&L MANUFACTURING CO MADE IN INDPLS USA. My question is: On the back side of the carb, just above and parallel to the top of the float bowl, there is a 15/64" hole. The hole is not threaded. Is this just a bowl vent or am I missing something on this carb? Thanks for any help anyone can give me. LeRoy

That hole belongs there. It's in all of um. A pressure-equalizing vent; don't worry about it! Welcome to the forum, LeRoy!

Leroy!
The model number for your carburetor should be stamped upon a rectangular boss on top of the carb body casting.
Your bowl vent will be very, very much smaller, with its location dependent upon the model, but completely separate from the venturi vent.
Vents to the venturi void supply air to the main nozzle upon accelleration and highspeed cruising;
M-36 models for 1949 had a much smaller small side-vent upon a raised boss,
but I haven't a proper reference pic for later '49 M-45s handy to coagulate my memory if they had returned to the large orifice so soon or not.
Got macro pics?
