  • H-D engine case value

i am hoping some of the knowledgeable members will help me here.
Regarding Harley flathead big twin engine case set with un-altered vin numbers and matching belly numbers.
Would most buyers consider a case set with title and registration that is current be more valuable than a case set that has not been licensed for 30-40 years and has no title, not on any vin computer, but sold with just simple bill of sale.

I am aware that the titled case is more valuable, but should there be a huge price increase ?? what is a general rule of how much percentage the titled case set should be more valuable ??

how do other buyers feel ??

I buy cases with no title. I just make sure I know who I am buying them from. Getting a title is no problem.

In the past titles were not very expensive. Now that Alabama requires inspection before a registration is issued I have seen titles bring $1,000.00.
      You do the math.

          Junkyarddog,

Alabama doesn't issue titles on antique bikes. I think the cutoff is somewhere in the 70s. I got a plate and registration on my 56 H-D KH motor with just a bill of sale a couple years ago. No inspection. They do inspect modern vehicles to see the VIN matches the paperwork. Have not heard anything has changed since I registered the KH.

            Bikenut13!

A lot depends upon which State you reside.
If you attempt to use an out-of-state title mill to register in Illinois, you will be cited for mail fraud, and the VIN will be outlawed outright.

You are right. Alabama did not have titles until 1970.
I'm telling you what I know.
A couple of years ago when I was in Alabama I could take my friend to the DMV and for about $17.00 he could get a registration .
A little over a year ago I bought to bikes in Alabama and the seller had to get them inspected to get a registration. I brought the bikes home and took them to get inspected to get a Nebraska title.
Granted there are still a few states that have not caught up with the times.
Where I live I will not buy any more with out titles

I am confused, i guess in california it cost 22.00 to get a title on a set of engine cases ?? that sounds un-usual, then somewhere else a fella could pay 1,000.00 that sounds more correct.
Getting back to my question about like case sets one with title and one without, are we saying the case set with tile may be worth 1,000.00 more or that it is so easy today to get a title on my case set i should only be paying 22.00 extra ??
Also we are not talking about complete bikes here, just engine case sets, i understand you cant get a inspection on a set of engine cases ??

You can't get a title on a part of a motorcycle. The title is for the whole machine. I have a dry assembled rolling chassis made from not so great parts. I toss a top end abd gear cover on the cases, bolt them in the chassis and take it in for number verification. The DMV charges $22.00 for an unregistered title. If you want a plate and registeration stickers is costs more.

In my opinion a title adds about $500 to the value of a set of cases. It probably varies from place to place. Jerry
