  • Democracy Or Republic

Now don't any of you get all riled up ! This is a FOOD FOR THOUGHT posting and its intent is not to draw comments, discussion. nor argument. No one has to read it. But then again...some may be enlightened by it.

Do we ever consider why all media. all public officials, and all educational personal, here in the USA, refer to our form of government as a democracy ? Yet we pledge allegiance “To The Flag Of The United States Of America And To The “REPUBLIC” [ not the democracy ] For Which It Stands” ?? Why publish the training manual noted below, if we are truly a democratic form of government ?

    TRAINING MANUAL } WAR DEPARTMENT,
    No. 2000-25 } WASHINGTON, November 30, 1928.
    CITIZENSHIP
Prepared under direction of the Chief of Staff
This manual supersedes Manual of Citizenship Training

This training manual was issued to all U.S. soldiers but shortly after the “bank holiday [crashes]” in the thirties, hush-hush orders from the White House were issued and suddenly demanded that all copies of this book be withdrawn from the Government Printing Office and the Army posts. All copies were ordered to be suppressed and destroyed. Herbert Hoover and Franklin Delano Roosevelt were the Presidents of the thirties. Paragraphs below are taken from this U.S. Government issued training manual.

    TM 2000-25: 118-120
    Democracy
A government of the masses. Authority is derived through mass meeting or any other form of direct expression. Results in mobocracy. Attitude toward property is communistic, negating property rights. Attitude toward law is that the will of the people shall regulate, whether it be based upon deliberation, or governed by passion, prejudice, and impulse, without restraint or regard to consequences. Results in demagoguery, license, agitation, discontent, and anarchy.

    TM2000-25:120-121
    Republic
Authority is derived through election by the people of public officials best fitted to represent them. Attitude toward property is respect for laws and individual rights, and a sensible economic procedure. Attitude toward law is the administration of justice in accord with fixed principles, and established evidence, with a strict regard to consequences. A greater number of citizens and extent of territory may be brought within its compass. Avoids the dangerous extreme of either tyranny or mobocracy. Results in statesmanship, liberty, reason, justice, contentment, and progress.

Our founding fathers were very wise men, guided by a higher power. While some wish the constitution was a "living document", it is not, nor was it intended to be. It was a set of rules to keep each individuals rights protected, while not weakening the country to outside threats. Those rules are now being infringed upon from the judicial branch that wants to legislate from the bench, rather than follow the rule of law as it was intended by the founders. Look no further than the last two supreme court justices, and the 9th court of appeals in San Francisco.

If I may comment from the outside, Paps, I expect those definitions were removed due to the rather unfortunate choice of names for the two US parties. By those definitions, the US has always been a "Republic" under both parties. Our two Canadian political parties that most compare with the Democrats and Republicans are the Liberals and the Conservatives- more accurate names, I think. Like yours, they aren't perfect either. Mind you, neither are we.
