I have look to see if there was a cart policy at these meets and have never seen one posted. I wouldn't mind using one at the larger meets. I can walk fine for a while but injured my leg in an accident years ago (8 ops to repair) and I have problems when I'm on it for a length of time.

couple of years ago I carried a motor on my shoulder, from east end to west at D-port. This year my gang figures to bring a club-cab, a parts hauler, maybe they'll be for hire.
The sidehack worked great for a while, without the body, with plywood. But if everybody did that we'd maybe get tired of it.

Loud PA
While we're singing said songs, I have another string to pluck.
I think the public address system was way louder then it needs to be.
If I was talking to a shopper at my booth and they were making an announcement, I had to ask the customer to wait until they shut up.
I seen no big problem with the bike and pit bike traffic.
The worst was not a kid, it was an older fat fart with a load expansion chamber that thought he was cool.
I do agree that kids should be instructed to stay out of the vendor area. There are plenty of open spot for them to ride.

We had it last year too. I think people are a little skeptical about it and don't beleive it's a free service, courtest of the Wauseon committee.
I'm sure if you went to the registration booth, or contacted one of the volunteers, they could call him to come pick you up. Like I said, that's what it's for.

Suzanne,
We appreciated the free "Taxi" your husband was
operating.
My wife needed a ride from the Registration tent,
to the Campground .... then back again when it was
92+ degrees and she really appreciated the service.

Us tooo!
My wife and I both were nearly run over in the vending area this year and last, not once but repeatedly! By youngsters AND oldsters! We were both extremely upset after each occurance.
Attending a meet is a time for shopping and meeting with old friends and new ones AND NOT a time for having to play dodg'em with kids and others on bicycles, motorcycles, and golf carts.
That said, I'm sure that most members have SAFETY as a priority during the meets (and elsewhere).
However, ponder this........
Does the AMCA and/or the meet sponsors have sufficient insurance or deep enough pockets should someone be hurt during the meet as a result of FAILING to inforce the under 16 rules?
Does the County Fairgrounds have sufficient insurance or deep enough pockets should someone be injured in an accident during the meet?
Do the parents of the under 16 riders have sufficient insurance or deep enough pockets should their children be involved in an accident causing injury to an attendee?
Suggestions
Suggest that upon entry to the grounds that each person be issued a copy of the rules for attending the meet which would include the NO DRIVING for those less than 16 and the rules for driving if one is over 16 and a licensed driver.....see below.
Suggest that the rules for attending the meet be posted in conspicous places around the fair grounds.
Suggest that those who are licensed and of driving age and who have a good and acceptable reason to drive a golf cart, motorcycle, or other conveyance on the fairgrounds be issued a temporary permit to drive within the grounds.
Suggest that the "no one under 16 driving rules" be announced by the P.A. frequently during the meet. Abeit a bit softer than this year.
Suggest that enforcement could be done by hiring the local law enforcement to monitor the hazardous situations. (Bring back Dick Winger!)
The main goal is to avoid having any type of an accident or any type of an injury to anyone during the meets. The Taxi Golf cart was an excellent idea and service to those attending. Maybe more than one or two carts would help. They were good drivers.
It's all about having fun, enjoying yourself and accountability! Sadly, some people have to be held by the hand and force fed.
Just food for thought!!!
Hope to see some positive changes next year! And to NOT get hit while shopping and having fun!Last edited by talbot-2; 07-25-2010, 02:40 PM.

Hey there folks,
I just thought that I would add that the Taxi has a ladies head on it. Her name is Madeline, she has been beheaded a time or two but it makes the taxi easy to spot. I enjoyed the services of John's driving, and yes it was especially nice when it was so doggone hot.
Thanks again. Denise

One of the great benefits of our national meets is to ride an early motorcycle on the grounds. Many of these early bikes are rarely allowed to stretch their legs and for many of us, it's rare indeed to see a Hedstrom Indian, a pre '09 H-D, or a Thor putt around under it's own power. I don't think it's too hard to imagine one high profile accident involving an under-age rider leading to a ban of any on-site motorcycling at a meet. MX and BMX are the perfect venue for kids to enjoy motorcycling and they can do it with their family. Not an AMCA meet.Eric Smith

I would have to think long and hard before I try and ride one of my pre-1913 cycles around in a meet. One crash by an "16 or under" unlicensed motorcycle or bicycle rider into anyone's early cycle would cost thousands. Maybe that's why we see very few early cycles at a meet. That's a good reason for the focus to have changed over the years.
Think about it. Would an owner of a Rolls-Royce, Bentley, or restored 1906 Pope-Toledo risk driving around in the meet. No way! There's not much difference in value of some of the early cycles these days. The risk is too high for many cycles regardless of age.
It's possible that if we set all of the wanna be's down, then more of the early cycles would be in attendance.
Still looking forward to improvements next year.

Vehicles in the meet grounds
Vehicles in general seem to be a problem on Friday and Saturday...and not just motorized; ever try to avoid a six year old on a bicycle, or try to predict what they're gonna do? It's a recipe for an accident.
Perhaps we should have a "no-fly zone" in the meet during the busiest days where no one in a golf cart or modern bike can ride. The exceptions could be staff workers on official business (cause we have to run all over the meet), the taxi and vintage bikes and the handicapped.
I think Davenport tries to do this, but I'm not sure how successful they are. I'll ask them when I'm there this year.
This would cut down the dust and the traffic. I can suggest it at the next meeting, but we'd have to consider all the pro's & con's, and how we would enforce it.
However, we still have to reign in the underage drivers. But we need help from the parents - after all these kids aren't trailoring these vehicles to the meet themselves, an adult or parent is doing it for them. They agree to the camping terms when they pay for a spot, and they can loose their membership if they don't comply.
Here is a link to the vending and camping terms:

I witnessed a couple of adults showing off the power of their vintage bikes, to the total disregard of the massive cloud of dust they also stirred up onto camp sites. Even my golf cart put up some dust. I noticed though...the tire putting up the dust was a turf tire on the rear drive. The opposite original rear and front tires did not stir up the dust. I will replace that turf tire before the next swapmeet.

We were left alone in the 70’s and even the 80’s
Somewhere in the 90’s we were told to shut it down “it’s a family event”
My kids always had something to ride…off to the side away from the crowd, and that’s what they remember about the meets.
Now its my grandkids turn,
What is a kid to do now? Sit in the sun for 2 or 3 days…leave them at home?
Lets fig. Out a way for them to have fun with a motor, you’re only a kid once…then it sucks.
