  • Harley model / vin numbers

I am looking for reference on Harley Davidson model / vin numbers from 1914 to 1930. Does any one know where I can find this info. Thanks

What type of reference? Photos or what numbers mean?

      Harley model/vin numbers

For example 1934 VL numbers might be (34 V 1000) or a 1965 FL could be (65 F 1000). From 1930 and later I know the number and letter designation. Prior to that, back to 1914 I have no idea what the correct letters would be.

        Harley model/vin numbers

The letter designation for individual models as used on the engine cases is what I am looking for not photos.

Chris (Daniel), on that web site you’ll notice the following: ‘This list is unofficial and is not gospel ...’

So please maintain a sceptical attitude when viewing it. I’ve been through some of its 1930-later info before and was unimpressed. Therefore I have to conclude the same could apply to the early info you’re interested in.

You’ll also find some model designations in The Legend Begins, an official Harley publication available via your dealer. But even H-D states their info is not to be regarded as totally accurate.

Two other books which contain some model designations: Harley-Davidson: The Milwaukee Marvel by Harry V Sucher; and The Harley-Davidson Motor Company: An Official Eighty-Year History by David K Wright. I have the info from Sucher and Wright on my computer and can send it to you if you want via PM or email. But again, info from these publications must be viewed with sceptisism. Eric

Chris, I agree with SBT, I know that the Sport Model "W" numbers for 1919 and 1920 are not correct on the list. The early Sport Models (1919-20) were all magneto models and only had a "W" in the number NOT "WF" like the list says. Thanks.

Bear in mind that before 1921 the letters in the model designation did NOT generally correspond with the letters found in the motor VIN number.

There was a column in the Club mag a couple issues ago that addressed the VIN question.
