  • Cast iron toy question

    Dear "Pickers" and "Pirates"!

How high should I bid on these crude little things?

Wheels are iron, not rubber. Franklin bill design zippo lighter in background for scale.

Who wants them bad enough for me to proxy?

    Thanks in advance,

    ....Cotten

    Dear "Pickers" and "Pirates"!

Not sure if your being sarcastic, or serious. But a true "picker" would know that those toys you have pictured are reproductions and not worth much of anything! But, if a "pirate" was sellin, and tellin those are real-period items-a sucker will be born! BPK!!!

      All attitude aside,

If they are older reproductions, are they still worthless?

They aren't my taste (they are toys), but my honest question was how much I should bid. $5 a piece? None of you greedy widow-rapers would give ten just to fill your shelves?

If I was a pirate I wouldn't even have posted. Duh.

Some serious identification would give a reply some credibility.

        bad reproductions

whenever I see a variety of toys of the same quality that is a red flag! Real old cast iron is smooth cast and halves fit together tightly. Halves are joined by peened or hammered bolts or rivets. Paint should be heavy enamel and if chipped, chips should be sharp edged.

This quality is common at large flea markets and wholesale importers and retail $5.oo to $10.00 range. They are decorative only with no lasting value.

          Steve!

I very much appreciate the sincere answer!

It's sad when a question receives personal rebuke.
What else is this forum for?

As I posted, they are indeed crude.

But I still wonder when you say the 'quality' is common, are these these supposed knock-offs common?

The source has been closed for many years, and the "patina" (geez I hate that word) is better than a local yokel would go to the trouble to produce.

If they are common, I must ask: How many "pickers" and pirates on this forum have ones just like them?

At this point, they are still un-identified.

              Kyle!

Did he put a vintage on them?

(After all, a Sixties repop is nearly a half-century old.)

              Thanks for your effort,

                Tom,
You will still find those toys at flea markets every weekend. Even Taiwan Tedd sells the motorcycle toy.

"Grandpa" Deckert, an old Harley test rider of many years past, used to buy antiques while riding all over SE Wisconsin as part of his job.

One of his interests were antique motorcycle toys and over the years he copped a BIG collection of them. When I knew him he still had a few left, but most of them had gone to a Milwaukee guy with a very famous last name who is also something of a collector.

The few I have are all cheap modern repros people gave to me. Good enuf!

The Flower Car was made in three different sizes. I have the small one.

                        Probably only go for 15g's.

Less as the original tires have been replaced with repops.

What? Did the original owner wear the tread off riding it so much? Must have delivered a LOT of flowers...small ones.

As with several toys I have with the white rubber tires. They simply fall apart after 75 years or so,
