It is around 2:15 on this beautiful sunny warm Sunday afternoon. Am I out riding and enjoying it? No, I am stuck here scraping and cutting to get the base gaskets off this old Panhead. I have been fighting it for over an hour so far. Foot shifter linkinkage in the way is no help. Gasket remover helps, but not much. So guys, when you are putting you engine together save yourself some future grief and never use a hardening gasket sealer. You can bet when these cylinders go back on I will be using Yamabond sealer. Contrary to reports of its demise I just bought two tubes from my local Yamaha dealer yesterday.

Base gaskets should never have a sealer applied anyway, as it can allow them to "walk" instead of stay put.

Light grease is traditional, although modern gaskets usually have a dry adhesive applied.

Next I find that this guy also used hardening sealer on the pushrod corks. What a dork.

I gather you didn't put the motor together Chris?

No, I just picked up this bike. I had to pull the heads to replace it exhaust spigots. Sandblasted the black cylinders, honed them and painted them silver as they should be.

hello chris,when i did the top end on my 45" my base gaskets had that hard sealent on em too,and i just painted ATF(dextron3) on the gaskets and let it sit for about 20 minutes and it made the removel way quicker.on thicker parts of the gasket i had to brush on and soak again but still sped up the process..have a gooder.

A flux brush and a little paint stripper makes the job easy.
