  • Where do you find them?

I’m often asked how I find all the old stuff I continually drag home. Well let me tell you about my day yesterday.

Brenda and I decided to go for a short ride over to Pennsylvania to check out the fall colors. The leaves change quicker there than in Ohio. We where just riding around the back roads without any destination in mind when suddenly and with out warning the rear tire blew out. This was Brenda’s first experience of riding on the back of a bike with me and knowing I had little control over where we where headed since the tire decided to let go on a long downhill sweeping right hand curve. It all ended well though. It always does.

So anyway after adjusting our shorts, the wife says “So now what?” I think she already knew that I didn’t have the slightest idea as to where we we’re. Luckly there was a farm house nearby and I swallowed my pride and knocked on their door to ask where in the hell I was. Talk about meeting some nice people. This elderly gentleman insisted on hooking up his trailer and getting the two of us home. While helping the old gentleman hook up his trailer his wife shouts out the door, “Hey Bill why not show the young man your old bike.” He gave his wife a very stern look, but said O.K. He took me out back to an old chicken coup and there under a tarp is a well preserved 1947 Indian Chief and a bunch of old Triumph parts. Needless to say he and I started drinking a few beers and telling old bike stories while the women stood around shaking their heads at us. I made a new friend yesterday and I’ve got a feeling I’m going to be bringing home my first vintage Indian before the snow flys.

Here are a couple cell phone shots of the first time in seven years my panheads has been on the side of the road. The shot of Brenda is while I was trying to talk her into walking up to the farm house for directions. LOL

WOW !!! That sceniero could not have happened to a nicer Bro. Not the tire failure, though you two came through that safely. which is the biggest plus, but the bonus of a new friend, his two wheel pony, and his compassion for a standed couple, takes the cake. As I said....could not have happened to a nicer Bro. Paps

Paps…Thanks for the kind words. And thanks again for the large favor you did for me this past spring helping to get my 45 back up and running. Sadly, I lost that race again this year though.

Eric, I got my fingers crossed to be able to work out a deal with my new friend for that Indian. I think I may have won him over when we all got back to my house and he saw that I’m also interested in antique tractors. I caught him smiling at one in particular. So I’m thinking about some sort of trade, maybe.

Yep, except for the part about getting that panhead up on his trailer, it was quite a day.

Sounds like quite the adventure Steve. These are the stories that keep us all going! Glad to hear the flat tire brought some good and that you made it home safe!

Steve, if you would be so kind as to supply the GPS coordinates to the farmhouse so I can stop by and thank the old boy personally for taking care of you and your wife so well.

Next time you run that race....drain a quart of the oil out, add a pint of white lighting to the fuel, adjust the carb, remove the air cleaner, and fly !!! After ya beat the other bike, don't forget to put her back to safe running liquids ! Good luck on the trade Bro ! Hope all works out for ya. And to think, several years ago, Kat told me I couldn't except my deceast uncles motorcycle cause we didn't have a garage at the time. The bike turned out to be a 47 Chief. Oh Well..... Paps

I’m trying not to let myself get to excited about getting that Chief after last years fiasco I had with that 34VLD. Sometimes I bite off more than I can chew. But man I sure would like to see that Chief in my garage.

Paps.. Where do I find that white lighting your talking about? That may be the all I need to beat that youngster next year. Between all the tuning hints I’ve gotten here and from you and Kurt, I was close enough this year that I could have kicked that young bucks rear fender if I was so inclined. Oh, we had a third guy join in the race this year as well. His flathead is much nicer than Mikes or mine so he didn’t really want to whoop on it like we do. LOL. So at least now I can claim to have come in second, instead of last. LOL

Steve--We have plenty of White Lightning here in NC. Just let me know what octane grade you need: 80 proof, 90 proof, etc., etc. LOL

Michael... I just may take you up on that offer. I've heard my whole life that if you want the best moonshine that N.C. is the place to get it.

Dave.. I can't give you the GPS location of that chicken coup but I will tell you that you can see it from either of those two photos. LOL.

Western PA has its' share of the brew also Steve. Most of it is east of the Allegheny's. Bet that Indian owner could hook you up. As Michael said...name your proof. The holiday season brings it out of the mountains. Paps

Good find, good story. What a great combination of events. An autumn ride and a mishap that turned into new friends and an old bike discovery. It doesn't sound like it rained either. Talk about a perfect day....

Steve. I'm curious to know what brand rear tire you were running? Is it one of the Coker repro's? A new modern Brand name tire? How about the 'date of manufature' on the tire. Did the tire actually blow out from failure or did you run over something sharp?

Glad you guys are ok. Might turn out to be one of those real once in a life-time meetings. There's a reason he still has the bike in the garage all these past years. Memories. Hrdly
