I’m not being sarcastic when I say that either. Let me tell everyone about a few members of this club which have helped me greatly just in the past year to get my 45” running at the best of its capacity. In my opinion we can never be sure if our machines are running at peak capacity until we have a friendly race with another machine, that was created equal to our own.
Where I live finding another 60+ year old machine like your own with an owner willing to race it is no easy task. I was lucky enough to have another owner of a 60+ flathead find me. That was three years back and once every year since, he and I pick a day in September to line our 45’s up and do a quick ½ mile, side by side. (Actually we do the best out of 3.) Matt Olsen would be proud because the owner of the other machine is just 29 years old and loves his WLA that his uncle left to him.
Getting back to my point about our great members here. After getting quite embarrassed on my first attempt a few years back to be at that ½ mile marker ahead of this young man, I asked for help from fellow members here and boy did I ever get it. I’ve had a member lend me their personal specialty tools to use and refuse to even accept from me the postage it cost them to send them to me. I’ve had a member toss me new parts I needed across the counter with out charge just to see if they where any better than what I was using. I’ve had a member do some manifold machining for me and barely charge me the cost to turn the machine on…..I could continue, but I think everyone gets my message.
What a great club we have.
