Interesting so far but nothing definate. I have several examples of each style. The ones with the early style cover (67 and earlier?) all have key codes on them while the later ( 68 and later?) all are of the blank tumbler type. These late versions do have a small cirlular mark on the tumbler but all of them have the Shovelhead style cover.

          Scott,
The later switches do have tumbler type cylinder, but no numbers. Your 'early' style switches are the 64-67 style with tumbler type cylinder and visible numbers.

Bill I have been buying switchs and parts for 20 years. They now cost $100 or more for a junk one. I use to buy them for $35 for a good one. Am looking to buy any switchs or parts. It's not the same money anymore, gas is $4 up 10 times the price when I was buying switch at $35.[IMG]

That is a Original 741 switch in the picture and it is for sale, $200
I can sell you a switch or repair yours. New look or old look it's up to you. I replace the main spring on all of them with NOS Harley part.

I have a an ignition switch with numbers on the tumbler , but it has a shovel type cap . Is this correct for an early Shovel or did someone change the cap at one time and this is an early switch?

                          switch housing material?

Hi, reading all of this great information, can someone please tell if at some point switches were made out of stainless? look at the pics I have attached. It is an original B&S switch with a B3 72 number on it. Talking to some folks, I gather that most switches were chrome plated?? or maybe not? the one in the pic did not pass the magnet test.. any input would be greatly appreciated.

                            They are chrome plated brass.
