  • Thanks to Rick Schunk

I want to switch this sentiment from the "Help wanted" thread started by Rocky because I want to be sure Rick gets the credit he deserves. There's a good chance that very few officers or members realize the enormity of the task of putting out the club magazine every three months -- and the calendar at the end of the year. I don't know what he was paid, but I'll bet most of us wouldn't want to work for his hourly rate.

Magazines of the quality of ours do not happen automatically--articles, ads and updates need to be solicited; deadlines need to be met -- this means harassing officers, contributers, and club-events reporters for articles; then when you do get the articles, they need to be edited for spelling, grammar, and syntax (and maybe rewritten) and sent back to the authors for approval; photos need to be begged, borrowed or taken -- and when a "great" photo you've been promised turns out to be a 72 dpi web image that's not fit for printing . . . well, you get the idea.

Then -- when you get all of the parts together (and you almost never get all of them until the last minute) -- there's the design and layout. Do you have a good enough cover photo for the feature story or will you have to make do? Will stories or pictures have to be cut to fit? What if you lay out a story with a half-page ad at the end only to be told later that the advertiser changed his mind and wants only a quarter-page ad? Then a proof gets sent out for approval (to the president? who else?) and there are more changes to be made.

With all of the files finalized and preped for imaging, you now deal with the printer -- then the mailer -- then the members wondering why the hell their buddy got the magazine before they did.

I think I got a little carried away. My goal here is to give Rick the credit he deserves. He has consistently put out a superior club magazine and has done it for many years. I sincerely hope that he resigned because he wanted to spend his time differently, and not because he felt unappreciated by the club leadership or members. We all owe him a debt of gratitude for his service to the club -- it's not going to be easy to find a replacement who can meet the standards he set.

Thanks Rick, the magazine is great due to your energy and it is a shame to see things happen.
I cannot anticipate any person or entity doing the job or having the backround to do so that you have. Hope the powers to be are happy.

As a professional publisher and magazine editor I can assure you most people have no idea how much work, frustration and creativity is needed to produce the kind of magazine Rick gave us every 3 months without fail.

Thank-you Rick for a job very well done. We'll miss you and have a tough time filling your very large shoes here.

Several of my friends (Rick Allen, Larry Gee, Raymond Miller) have had their bikes included in the AMCA calendar over the years and all told me how impressed they were with the care he took in getting the photos just so. His attention to detail in his work and his love of these fine antiques is plain to see in the quality of his work.

Best of luck, Rick, in wherever your path leads.

              WOW!
Kinda shocking and sad to read this! I've purchased the magazine for years off the newstand before I wised up and joined last year. I subscribe to over 25 publications and this one has always been a class publication with great content not just ads. Kudos to Rick and the effort he put forward.

Rick Schunk was the hardest working person in our club but the good thing about it is, he has 18 years of world class magazines to show for it and the admiration of the entire membership of the AMCA. Charlie Carter was the editor of the "Antique Motorcycle" prior to Rick. Charlie had to deal with the same problems and challenges as described by rbc with the exception that it was in the days before Photoshop. I don't know the circumstances that Rick left under but in Charlie's case it was. . . . . Not good. My favorite story from Charlie about his waning days as Editor was of a national board meeting. After telling the board about the numerous challenges of putting out a magazine 4 times a year the board assured Charlie that they were "behind him all the way". Charlie's reply was; "I know, you're so far behind me I can't even see you"! I wonder if we could replace Rick's name with Charlie's and have the same story.

I have had several dealings with Rick over the years that he handled with a friendly professionalism that you always expect from people but you hardly ever seem to get. When meeting in person, he always greeted you with a smile and a "what can I do for you" attitude. Thanks Rick for all the hard work making our magazine the best motorcycle magazine in print.
