  • Daytona Vintage Races

I try to make it to Daytona for Bike Week, and last year we found out about the Vintage races on monday. We had a great time seeing the old racers, walking through the pits and listening to the motors. Are the Vintage races always held on monday? There was no admission, and the pits were open. Is this always the way it always is? It was a great time and we spent the whole day there. Anything else we should be sure to see?

    Thanks,
    Paul

    Look at the AHRMA website,
www.AHRMA.org, for a full listing of all their activities at Daytona.

      Howdy Paul,

The Monday vintage races have varied considerably over the last 20 years in every respect from huge infield shows by marque to recent holding of swap meets. What you encountered last year was sort of unique...both in ease accessibility and non-race related pit activities.

This event has always had an admission (generally $20 a day/walkup), but with the much-publicized arrival of a container load of tank shifters and their enthusiastic owners from Aus/Oz along with an invitation (paid/waiver signed) for vintage american machines to have a parade lap around the track starting from outside the speedway and ending in the pits, things got a bit hectic and you could wander in/ride around like never before. Doubt that'll be the case this year.

Anything else to see? Depends on your favored marque: Vincent, Indian, Triumph, Norton, Duck, BSA, BMW or even Vespa - they all have specific gatherings during the wk. But in general, related to the vintage races, tech on Sunday is usually entertaining, largest general enthusiast attendance on Monday with Tuesday more geared to the participants with far less infield fan presence.

As you know, Deland/Stetson's athletic center has now become the focal point for vintage with both a swap meet commencing Wed along with marque-specific shows/rides and gatherings (dinners). Jerry Wood's presides over the festivities and the general schedule can be viewed here .
