  • Hijacking on Ebay

Just heard a news story on CBC some poor schmuck from Calgary, ( a recent unsuspecting Kosovo immigrant ) lost 25 grand for a car he bought on a hijacked auction. Not only will Ebay not respond to his calls they won't respond to the RCMP as well , maybe they are afraid of being tazered. I would have thought with Ebay's money they could have put a stop to this as it has been going on for too many years. I have had many of my auctions hijacked over the years and in spite of alerting ebay and bidders ( of course now you can't do that with the hidden identities) watched the auctions go to the end wondering if the duped winner paid. Maybe we should all start using the buy and sell we have right here it's free and it seems underused .

    Barry,

That sounds good to me it supprises me that it isn't used more here.

I am working on a 30 VL and have considered liquidating some parts from various bikes that I have had for years to continue funding thr VL.

Do you have the original twin headlights? I think I have a pair of nos small screws and springs? that hold the bezels on. They are different from 1929. I will donate them if you need them assuming I can find them! Does your VL still have the original factory recalled flywheels?

No Barry I don't have the twin lights as for the flywheels that I have they are stamped "C" for package truck and sidecar the bottoms of them are pitted.

It came home in about 4 big blue plastic totes

I have purchased and returned 2 sets of flywheels from different sellers on e-bay due to the difference in the condition of them one pair I honestly think this guy sent me pictures of a different set because what I received wasn't even close to the pictures that he sent me both sets had cracks around the holes for the shafts and one set the keyways were even beat out so bad it was pathetic he said that he didn't notice that.

The one guy did refund all the money and shipping one way the other guy with the fake photos just refunded the cost of the wheels alone I ended up bitting the bullet on the round trip for the shipping cost and still no flywheels........live and learn

            Thanks Perry

That just gives me that much more of a distrust with the e-bay system some sellers are getting fed up with the pay pal costs that are charged to the sale items also.

I am not even sure how long I have belonged to the AMCA I have not had a chance to attend a meet had hoped to make Oley the last couple of years but it seems that something always comes up......and yes I am still hoping to make it this upcomming year

            Barry,
Thanks for the offer for the screws and the springs.
The plan is to get it together and running first naturally the list is fairly long of the things that I need for it let alone the stuff that I would like to have for it.

I don't know what VL sheet metal parts go for at swap meets I have seen what they do go for on steal-bay which kinda sways me to the reproduced sheet metal.

I have considered bringing some things to Oley but on the other hand I also want to be able to look around I don't want to be tied down trying to sell things.

While going thru some things about a week ago I posted a question about a pan trans I wasn't sure of the year that it was that and some other things I may sell off to move the VL project further along.

The Sheet metal items needed are
left side tank..........mine has a few holes in it,the right side is in decent shape

Inner and outer primary chain housing

Rear fender.........er mud guard........mine needs some work the metal is pitted pretty bad needs a hinge pin and part of the bracket is missing.

Oiler cover has a few holes and somewhere down the line somebody tried to braze them up.......wasn't to sucessful either.

The trans is done I just need to make up my mind on a color to paint it so I could start assembling the parts in the frame.

Oh..........The front tire is a 19X4 made by Canadian tire in Toronto Canada from what I was told this bike ran the roads in Canada in the early 70's

Thanks for posting that info, I have used e bay with so so results, a few good deals. I did not know that was going on and appreciate the heads up. I usually only bid on low budget stuff, but I still appreciate the heads up.

Chuck, Are you aware of "Rat" at Harbor Vintage in Jonesville Vermont ? They are the VL experts, also Steve Sloan in England. You MUST go to Oley . It is the best of all the meets for many reasons.

Yes Barry I have purchased items from both Harbor vintage and VL Heaven.

I have what I believe is Steves 4th edition of restoring the VL as I understand it I believe there is a 5th book out with more information.

Still planing to get to Oley if anything just to see the bikes that have been in some of the photos that others have posted from Oley.

How many times you been there?

BTW Oley's in my back yard ...Lucky me I guess. I too enjoy ebay and it has helped me year around with collecting parts with ease...although I have been burned on a small scale compared to the above and yes I have purchased full collectable Vehicles overtime and they can be risky site unseen sending deposits. Recently I purchased parts at a Buy-it -now price from a past seller I dealt with that had a very good reputation, after my purchase and I paid with pay-pal the part never came...his feedback from other but-it now sales were coming in as negitive which I found unusual with his history and kept up faith. Needless to say I got burned with many others. Ebay didn't answer any of my emails about this trend and it was my fault for waiting past 45days to file a pay-pal claim for funds returned. I trusted this individual from past experience. I still manage to keep my faith in mankind and feel the pain of others when Theives enter our passion. Keep riding them..Merlin in Pa.

I don't find a 5th edition, but additions to the 4th are posted at http://www.vlheaven.com/tech.html ...bill
