Does anybody know whether the engine and frame numbers on these bikes are supposed to match?

The short answer is no they don't.
The letter codes prior to the numbers tell it all. If you post the letter codes I can tell you what year the frame and engine are.

CAN YOU TELL ME WHERE TO FIND THE FRAME NUMBERS ON MY 1950 ARIEL SQUARE 4 ? MY ENGINE NUMBERS START OUT WITH JJ.

On my 48 SQ 4 it's on the right hand side in the area below where the front of the seat attaches. C.L. Waller's book or the Draganfly catalogue should tell you if it's in a different area.

John is correct. It's immediately behind the frame hole that the bolt to hold the top oil tank mount goes through. If a sidecar is fitted the third link would be in that hole also.
JJ is a 1950 motor and if you have a spring frame it will have a CW code and a rigid frame will have a TD code if the frame is 1950.
If it's not either of the above lets know and I'll tell you what year it is.
          Hope this helps. Tommo

            can anyone answer this question?
i also have a 1950 square four and was wondering how those bikes are titled, is the title supposed to match the motor no. or the frame no.??
just curious because im buying a motor that comes with a bill of sale and a pink slip from california, which should allow me to title the bike in my state. im just not sure if the those bikes are titled by frame or motor number.
any help would be greatly appreciated
            thanks, Tom S.
