When I painted my 41 FL pile-o-parts rider, I used matte clear epoxy over everything to give it the look I was after. No faking anything, I just didn't want shiny on it.

When I was working on my flathead I decided to replace a number of parts, some for functionality and some to come more in line with the vision I had. That left me with some aged portions on the bike and some newly painted/fresh portions. I didn't love the mix and match at first and debated having everything refreshed, but I like the look of a used bike that has scars and stories to tell. In the end I decided to leave the old stuff old and the new stuff new. I won't fret over a scratch or nick in my newly painted parts, they'll just add to the character and story the bike will tell under my watch.

It’s YOUR bike. Do with it as you will. Enjoy it how you see fit. With that being said…some of the patina paint jobs look awful to me. When done right though it’s amazing what some of the painters can pull off.
