  • Fraud Alert

I want to notify AMCA Community Forum members of an attempted fraud of one of our members. Our member posted a topic in the "Wanted" forum looking for some restoration parts. A person with a username contacted and gave him an email and name to contact for the parts. This person with the user name, making him appear to be a forum member, had registered for the forum but I had not approved them yet. Our member alerted me to this scam. Thankfully PayPal notified our member that they think the seller had set up a fraudulent transaction. When I looked into the person with the username I found that he had just joined AMCA using the 90 free trial opportunity. I had what I felt was a preponderance of evidence to ban the person from the AMCA Community Forum and I am sure they will be removed from the 90 day free trial membership by AMCA. I hope this person has not committed fraud on any of our other members in the meantime.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you think something in regard to transactions on the forum don't seem right. As in this case when you look at all the information together it forms a picture of whether a person is legit or not. I am only operating here from a position where I have enough info to convince me so I am not going to give out the person's name or other info. But if what I described sounds familiar let me know. Thanks and stay safe!

I was unaware that a 90 day free trial AMCA membership was offered. Has this program proved to be of great benefit for recruitment of new paying membership?

After reading the above I would strongly suggest that it would be wise to place restrictions on the free trial membership, and that the AMCA Community Forum and Vintage Library should be excluded from trial membership participants entirely. If that's too harsh, I offer the suggestion that there are other forum platforms that restrict classified section participation by a new group member for a duration of time and/or until a minimum number of forum contribution posts are accumulated. Maybe something to look into.

Thanks for your alertness, and decisive action, Mike. As for the scammer crook; have some dignity, and just get an honest job.

They started the trial memberships a couple of years ago. I haven't confirmed the fraudster may have actually messaged our member as a guest because I hadn't even approved his Forum membership yet. We have allowed guests to have access to the forum like the 90 day free trial to interest people and hopefully recruit new members and new people to the antique motorcycle world. We need to look into some limitations as you suggested. There's always someone out there that can see a slick path to a new fraud. Thanks for your comments.

I would like to warn other bike builders of Geloman's in Spain, I sent him money to build a frame and front end for my 1917 Harley Project about 5 months ago and all I getting is excuses. Here is a link to his sight, Best American Antique Race Motorcycle Parts Selling Website › Geloman. Please be careful when dealing with this guy. I am out 5000 euros and he keeps making excuses why he has not completed my order. Take Care

I'd like to repeat Badger's request to ban temporary members from the Vintage/Virtual Library. There are many thousands of dollars worth of rare reference literature in there that we don't want to see downloaded and sold on.

I agree with a ban on Library access for temporary members. If there was a way they could get a limited 'peek' but no download privileges. Maybe access to see what the library holds but No access to the literature kept there.

Agree and our web master is working on finding a way to limit our sites to paying AMCA members only.

If a 'library' button doesn't show up anywhere on the forum for me, Paul,

Does that mean I have already been banned?

(I tried to access something years ago, but it warned I'd get kicked out if I used it.)

"If a 'library' button doesn't show up anywhere on the forum for me,"

                        Tom;

On the AMCA Homepage under Features
Fourth Item Down "Vintage M/C Library" Click This
                        Then look to the Left
Really not a button but in Blue Letters Underlined
"Vintage Motorcycle Library AMCA Member Access Link"
That should take you to the Library.

I would NEVER ban you MAN. I hope you know this.

The only thing better than the Library is members like YOU who willing share their hard earned knowledge with the rest of us.

                          There's an AMCA homepage, Paul?

(My bookmarks are so old they come up Error 404)

As I posted, it was years ago, but the 'agreement' said any commercial use would be punished.

Think about that if you are a business.

                          PS: Thanks Paul,
I websearched for the 'homepage', and can see 'virtual library' down to the left, but my password is not accepted!

                          Yet here I am.

                            Tom;

GREAT that you found the Homepage.
                            Half way there.

                            Thing of it is
The Homepage is separate from this forum
Homepage wants a different password from the one used to access the Forum.

For a time I was able to use the same password and actually had my log in 'auto-saved'
then one day I could not get to Library or archived back issues.

It was just easier to go through the "forgot my password" routine for the Homepage
                            and create a new password.

Now I have 2 one for the forum and one for the Homepage.

I know, it's a mind twister but there it is.

But I've jumped through too many hoops already,

Probably to only find there isn't any new Schebler lit anyway.
