  • What goes in the forum - Old Photos: Pre-1930? Here's details!

    Greetings All:

I want to let you know that I have modified our most popular AMCA Community Forum Topic with detail to make specifications for what goes in that forum more clear. The forum is Old Photos: Here is the place for those old photographs... I hope you all have become aware that my practice of moderation is to do moderation without overdoing it. Its like getting that haircut that you are not supposed to notice that anything has changed. Here's the deal, the Old Photos Forum is for old Photographs. Not modern images of something old but an old photo, one that has survived and may have been rediscovered behind a wall, in an old book, behind the main picture frame backing - it gathered dust, sun light, moisture and fingerprints for decades, one that has that look of old, but it has been looked at lovingly over and over to the point its edges are care warn, wrinkled, torn and dog eared. It must be an old photograph. The old photos are used for people to see details of the machines and how they looked with the people that worked on them and rode them as they were used back in the day. You all will readily know it when you see it. This moderator will remove posts that do not meet the old photograph specification using the moderator's judgement of what old is. In the following I have pasted the changes to the subject line and the content of the first, sticky topic in the Old Photo Forum.

Vintage (Old Photographs Only) Pics of the Day

(((Please include only old photos - not photos of old things)))

Vintage Pics of the Day was a favorite forum on CAIMag.Com and some guy named Oscar Wilde said Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness. So lets see if we can meet the goal of at least one vintage motorcycle photo every day until ...

Find the topic -- Vintage (Old Photographs Only) Pics of the Day at the link that follows

    - -

So there you go - contact me anytime with questions or concerns. PS I will create a place, a new topic that encourages the capturing of any more current day image, drawing, video link or otherwise related to antique motorcycle visual.

A big shout out to you forum members that have kept the Vintage Pics of the Day Topic going. Some of you have been on it daily. A tip of the helmet to you! Kudos for all your contributions.

    Cheers

Help me out and point the way. Also, if you see something that do not comply with the AMCA rules like the one you mentioned please report it. I only, will get a report form that will take me directly to the issue.

To get to topic "Vintage Pics of the Day" you must first enter the section "Old Photos: Pre-1930", why? We don't adhere to a pre-1930 timeline and the 1930 date should be removed or modified. Plenty of great vintage photos through the 80's as far as I'm concerned, especially racing competition photos.

Deebs .If that was meant for me, you can take it down. I'm not a little kid tattling on you. I am a man that respects Women & I don't think that is the values of our club.

Relax Duffy, I like the content you post in the photo files. You are a great contributor with a lot of knowledge. However, I have received many complaints about the "Too Much Skin" file ranging from "Too, Too Much Skin" to "Not Enough, Too Much Skin" so unfortunately, it is not worth the effort of contributing to that file anymore because of the controversy.

Other than that issue, what you have here is a couple of major contributors (mainly myself and JoJo) who post daily and sometimes even hourly. For free. No, wait, we have to pay to actually contribute to this forum and we get called out (after years of free material is posted, literally thousands of images, 255,897 views) because of a technicality. I call BS. This is not being handled correctly.

All images are of 50+ year old bikes. What needs to be done is to adjust titles and announce the date that these changes are all going to be made. What I find interesting is there is a clear innuendo pointing to "This Old Indian" (Which should probably be moved to the Indian section no big deal) but no mention of a popular music forum that is posted in the same photo file. It's hard not to take that personally from my point of view.

I don't like how you are handling this Mike. If there is a violation of material the person should be contacted directly and the issue worked out privately. It's rule number 1 in management not to correct in public. You used public innuendo and humiliation tactics in order to get your task accomplished. I mean, come on, it's old motorcycle pictures.

I have posted perhaps hundreds of vintage images and get comments and likes which I appreciate for the effort. I posted this photo and for the first time Mike Love comments on one of my photos which coincidentally was at the same time he created this particular topic. I think this was an innuendo directed at me that this photo was "correct behavior".

First off, the AMCA is based on a 35 year policy, which puts the cut-off date at 1991. Some of us older dudes remember 1991 like it was yesterday, let alone pictures from almost One Hundred years ago.

Alas, Mr. Love, you’ve missed your calling as a politician. The old photos pre-1930’s column was initiated 5 and half years ago! It should have been nipped in the bud at the inception of dismay if You felt there was non-conformity!!! I agree that it was a defamation of the heading, but wasn’t the premise to pick up where CAIMAG left off? The pre-30’s pictures are getting difficult to track down, and by leaving out the Art Deco 1930’s and pre & post war periods, or the fabulous 1950’s prosperous Years, i feel that the only way to honor those points in time, would be to start another thread that would include the Americana of those post-1930’s, and to also include the transitional 1960’s & 70’s.

As far as commenting on the...
'Toooooooo Much Skin' oxymoron/controversy, i'm not even going to go there, because it would be like throwing Fire on the Sun, in all directions.

*PS. Thank You Deebs, your comments have a lot of advise & truth in content.

                          How About Separate Forums?

                          Photos FROM 1930 and before
                          Photos FROM 1931-1940
                          Photos FROM 1941-50

                          Photos FROM 1961-70
                          Photos FROM 1971-80
                          Photos FROM 1981-90
                          Photos OF Old Bikes

Recall there was a post about attracting younger members, folks today take more photos with their phones in a month than I took with a camera in my lifetime.

On the "Too Much Skin" issue: If it offends you DON'T LOOK. the use of attractive women has been used in advertising to sell everything from apples to motorcycles since the beginning,

I have been going to AMCA meets for over 40 years. Going back in time to CAIMAG forum... I think vintage pics was originally started by the late great Lonnie Isam JR. who share images from his personal postcard collection, pre 1930. At one point I was not very happy with this forum. I started posting one pic of my postcard collection every day for over 90 days on CAIMAG. Caimag became the place to be & this forum almost dried up. This is where Vintage Pics of the Day on this page started. I have only had subscriptions to 2 motorcycle magazines in my life, American Iron & AMCA. Neither had degrading pics of women. If it doesn't belong in the club mag it doesn't belong here either. As for the music stuff, I don't think anybody comes to this group for that & only limited numbers participate, kill it.

Since we're gathering opinions, here are mine on all three threads:

I agree the music thread is useless, everyone has their own taste, and I'm not interested in knowing other people's taste in music. I just click it to get it off my new topics list and go back.

The Vintage photos is cool, and I would like to see it formally moved to include newer photos, maybe up to the late 60's -early 70's which was the heyday of modern motorcycling. Especially stock bikes, too.

As far as Too Much Skin, I already said it should stick to it's original intent, to show vintage photos. They aren't meant to be titillating in today's world, but they are historically interesting. This isn't the forum for T&A, and those type pictures should not be included, even if posed on old looking bikes.

Mike, I don't envy your job as a moderator, you can't please everyone. In the end, you have to do what you think is right for the forum, and we all have to shut up and move on as adults.
