I'm 73 and I guess I'm at an age when the true agony and impact of what was willingly endured by the greatest generation can be fully understood. I read the above with extreme emotion. Thank you all for the above thoughts and contributions and for the reverence you express for our our fathers who, without question or hesitation, gave so much.

My oldest brother lost his hearing in a tank during WWII,
My Aunt Mildred Fish Harnack was killed by Hitler's personal order on February 16, 1943. She was non-military but working as a spy along with her German husband. She was killed by guillotine, her husband was tortured & slowly hung with a piano wire.

Mildred's older sister, Harriet, lived in Chevy Chase, MD, was married to Fred Esch who worked for the DOJ. Mildred & Arvid had visited Fred to offer their "services" to the US but was denied as the US was not yet involved with the war & did not want to be involved. The next option was to volunteer for the USSR as they were an ally at the time.
