$24.2k for a '66 Lightning is nuts, seller must be laughing all the way to the bank.

Not only that Steve, when the BSA arrived on stage, the announcer stated..."Perfect for any Man Cave''! haha
Also, lots of really obvious 'Faked Aging' on this Auction.

Todd bought 'Greenie' in January 0f 2014 at Bonhams Auction-Las Vegas for $140,000.00 plus premium fees, which put the grand total at $159,000.00. So he made 41 grand profit, minus Mecum fees. But, he had a reserve of 300K on the two times he tried to sell the 1940 EL on eBaY, in the past year and a half.

All in all, a pretty good day for Todd. He sold a 1947 James, H-D dealer signs, and some parts, plus memorabilia. I added the totals and it was around a quarter of a Million.

Mechum charges the seller 10% so he made somewhat less at $30k (less shipping charges), which works out to an average profit of 3.6%/year. Over the same period the stock market rose 80%, or 13.4%/year. Had he put the $140,000 into an index fund instead he would have $252,500 today instead of the $189,000.

Irrespective of the actual buyer's and seller's fees plus transportation costs that I'm not taking the time to look up he lost at least $50k over what he would have had with the money in a stock market index fund instead. Of course there are intangibles with owning a motorcycle that merely looking at the cash doesn't take account of. But when you write about the cash "profit" someone made by buying and selling a motorcycle, you can't ignore the effect of inflation or the stock market unless your intent is to make yourself feel better (or fool your spouse into thinking you made a wise "investment").

You can negotiate sellers fees down during pre consignment . Several large auction houses offer zero seller fees on items re auctioned through them. I don't know if mecum has this option.

Could-a, would-a, should-a. Sounds like sour grapes to me. Some people need other people to make money for them, some do not, it all depends on what type of person you are. I personally enjoy making my own money and couldn’t stand having my broker make or lose money for me. Just like there’s really no right or wrong answer on the best path to turn a profit, there will always be someone who will find fault in someone else’s bike. Not because it was a bad purchase, but because of who owns it. Let it go people. He made an honest profit, a profit, not a loss regardless of the spin anyone wants to put on it.
