Nice bike but I was surprised with price as well. A good friend of mine who is an AMCA member from 70s has a 51 or 52 (I can't remember) unrestored original paint bone stock pan that has 800 original miles that has never been offered for sale (he will likely sell this spring). Will be expensive but would imagine closest comp is the one you note with 5000 miles that just went for 50k. Anyone interested send me an email but remember it will be expensive and this comp won't help (would assume for 50k he would let it go if not I will likely list on ebay for him). I saw that '52 listed on Ebay. The price is a bit stunning but that was an exceptional motorcycle. Out of curiosity, did anyone see the 1940 Indian Chief that was listed a few weeks ago. It too, was an unmolested original paint bike that wasn't as well preserved as the '52 HD but still a remarkable bike. Does anyone know what it eventually sold for ? I have enclosed a picture of the Chief

That Chief sold for $35,219.40. The eBay item number is 4595179892.

It's become a rich man's hobby.

And as much as some won't like it, dollars and cents alone will usher in the Japanese bikes for new people who want to join this hobby.

The good old days were when you could pick up a stock Knuck or Pan for $100-$500 bucks. I remember those days.

I talked to one old guy who bought an old Indian for 25 cents, altho that was before my time.

The increased value is good and bad. Obviously hurts those who are trying to afford their first bike to get in the hobby- I feel bad for these guys. On the other hand many of my friends who have been collecting for a while will make at well (some have already). They never thought their largely blue collar hobby would be so valuable today. Many of these guys never had money. Some guys are retiring (literally) on selling a couple bikes a year and living better lives for it. A lot of these guys are the true pioneers and enthusiasts who have brought such a wealth of knowledge for later generations to enjoy. The other thing that has resulted from the increased value is how well most now take care of their machines (some guys hardly ride and just keep a "museum"). I miss the days when I use to ride a servicar through trails in the woods to Patty Cramer's old HD dealer in Brewster NY- hitting the same tree branches (further scratching the nice patina on the original paint), burning the the hell out of the clutch up some steep terrain and trying to salvage the muffler that got ripped off from some boulders that I didn't quite make it over. Today I have another original paint servi but no woods riding planned anytime soon!

I too miss those days!speaking of a Blue Collar Sport,I hope it still is for the most part ! I had the misfortune of dealing with a upperclass know-it-all a few years back over a 38 switch,he thought he had me by the balls! Tried to impress me with what he had,After it was alll said and done I had what HE wanted more, butguess what his attitude got the best of him..not me,I got the part I needed and he...well I hope he is still looking for it, Now not everyones like that,still bikers out there but as the prices go up so will peoples noses,and those little little/large museums you mention???? I have a few fairly nice bikes in my garage and they get ridden because I bought mine to ride and enjoy! Hope my kids can do the same and remember when they were young and rode with their dad!

$50,000. for a Pan !! (any pan) The world has came to an end. Life as we know it is over. It's now officially a rich man's hobby. I would lover to meet the idiot who bought it, I have a garage full of bikes for sell to him and his friend's. I could probably retire early. He can bring his wife (Muffy ?) over too for me to...... well anyway if any one want to just go for a long ride and drink a few beers, come on over.

I like it- 2 chicks named Lovey and Muffin, a couple dead poodles, a guy who paid 50k for a 52 pan with a sportster front end, ape hangers and straights (well ok this part isn't exactly true but sure makes the story even better!) and a herd of hurtin antique motorcycle nuts about to fall off the edge of earth as a result of all of it. Life could not get any worse. I'm gonna live in an Afgan cave.
