Although I moved to Florida almost 25 years ago, when I lived in the snow belt I got to know how tough it was to enjoy motorcycling in the winter. Even when you ride, the bitter cold and slick roads take a lot of the fun out of the sport. Riding year-round is one of the reasons I love the Sunshine State so much.
This is your invitation to take a few days away from the bad weather and join other members of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America in the warm, tropical setting of South Florida. From February 26 through March 1, 2006, the headquarters for our road runwill be the Miccosukee Resort and Gaming Casino, on the edge of the Everglades but just twenty minutes from downtown Miami. We’ve negotiated a special group rate for AMCA members so you can bring your families and spend leisure time enjoying an amazing array of entertainment and recreational activities. The resort offers 24-hour gambling action, with over 1000 slot machines, 58 poker tables, and high stakes bingo. Every guestroom has cozy and comfortable accommodations, with custom fabrics and draperies. Miccosukee Resort has an 8,500 square foot daycare center, beauty salon, European spa, fitness center, and 24-hour room service.
Three Days of Unique Riding Experiences:
The reason for our Road Run is, of course, three days of unique riding experiences in three of South Florida’s most picturesque areas. To give you a flavor of what is in store, here are some descriptions of the routes we will take as they appeared in our chapter newsletter accounts of earlier rides along those routes:
Ride Through the Reservations: “We toured many miles of delightful scenery that offered a wonderful study in the aquatic plants of the State. South Florida roadways are lined with miles of canals and the aquatic plants were in full bloom and made for easy identification. The deep purples of the floating water hyacinth were quite striking and belied the menacing nature of this plant. The lush foliage of the yellow-flowered primroses and bladderworts, coupled with the white-flowered fragrant water lilies and arrowheads, made it difficult for me to keep my eyes on the road!”
Ride Through the ‘Glades: “Everglades National Park scenery was a particular delight for this rider to behold. . . . I cannot recall ever seeing over 20 miles of uninterrupted cypress swamps and wetlands. . . . Slightly more than half way to our destination, we pulled off at Nine Mile Pond. This rest area sounded so much more palatable than Snake Bight Trail; besides, we didn’t want to give the women on the ride any bad ideas. We were heartily greeted at our rest stop by a 7-8 feet long lizard, also known as the American alligator.”
Ride Down the Keys: We passed by landmarks like Pennecamp Coral Reef State Park; the Caribbean Club, where the Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall movie was filmed in the Forties; and the African Queen vessel herself, on display at the Holiday Inn, down A1A in the direction of Key West. It was one of those rides where you want to stop, time and time again, to check out sights along the way; but at the same time you want to keep the throttle open, enjoying the curves and bridges and wind against your face. The islands and bights look great anytime, but they are so much nicer when you are out in the open, on a two-wheel pirate frigate with your shipmates riding along. These bridges have names like Lignumvitae, Snake Creek, and Indian Key. . . . The islands’ names are adventurous and romantic-sounding places as well: Islamorada, Matecumbe, Fiesta Key, and many more.
