Cannonball 2018

Fifteen months after it arrived at my house my 1928 Ariel is ready (I hope!) for the Cannonball. It's in a crate along with spares, tools, and riding clothes waiting for the shipping company to pick it up later today. Knock wood, I'll next see it in Portland in a week. Registration and tech inspection begin Wed. Sept. 5 and the official start is Fri. Sept. 7 with a short run to a nearby location for a group photo. The circus leaves town headed west starting at 7:30am on Sat. Sept. 8.

I suspect more than one person will be documenting the ride, but for those who want to follow my posts, search for charlesfalco on Instagram and 'Follow' the feed. I've already started posting Cannonball-related images but the pace will pick up once I get to Portland next week. Not to worry you but I checked the weather report for Logan Pass MT earlier today and even though it's August it was predicted to be 39 of with "Rain/snow likely and breezy." ...wait, you're from the Midwest. That's a mild spring day for you, isn't it?

I've only done one Cannonball, so I'm probably not qualified to say this, but I think that good gear will be more of a factor in the 2018 Cannonball than it has been in previous events.

The crate with my motorcycle also holds a lot of gear that I hope will keep me in relative comfort from below 30 oF to above 100 oF, although there's only so much one can do about torrential rains or sleet storms. I also very much hope we don't hit temperatures near either end of that range, or rain and sleet storms.

Look forward to meeting you guys too, and riding together a bit. With the sidecar rig, we need to get a run at the bigger hills which makes our speed varh quite a bit.

Snow suit and tire chains packed for Logan pass, if they get the fires under control and reopen the road!

In case it's of interest to anyone but me, I compared the list of riders originally sent to us a year ago to the ones currently on the Cannonball web site. A quick count showed there were 114 riders on the original list and there are 108 now. However, it's not that 6 dropped out. Of the original list, 15 dropped out (13%) and they were replaced by 9 new riders.

Harleys (48) and Indians (27) make up 69% of the total entries, and with Hendersons (9) and Excelsiors (7) those four marques make up 84% of the field, accounting for all but 17 bikes. I could have missed something in skimming the list but, other than 3 Nortons, it looks like there's only one each of the remaining 14.

Tracking shows my 1928 Ariel was delivered to Boston today, so the Cannonball is a big step closer to actually happening for me. It's at a warehouse where my teammate's HD also was delivered. He and our driver will get both bikes on Tuesday and drive them to Portland in the truck that will follow us across the country.

Does anyone know the location where the cannonballers be staying when they arrive in Bowling Green,Ohio on sept.11th.Trying to line up some local NBC media coverage & they told me that they would need that info
