I have made them in the past by cutting the threaded portion off of a larger bolt, then drilling a hole in the center and tapping it to the desired size and thread pitch. It would be nice if they were readily available off the shelf though. There are a lot of old Brit bikes on this side of the pond.

Apologies if you already know this, but "Whitworth" is often confusingly used for both the thread form (55-deg. with rounded roots and crests) as well as for the coarse pitch fasteners. Despite the difference in thread form, for most purposes (except 1/2"-12) it's possible to substitute UNC for Whitworth. However, for British Standard Fine (BSF) (which has the same 55-deg. "Whitworth" thread form and which many people also call "Whitworth") none of the pitches match to a common U.S. fastener so there's no choice but to get the proper Recoil insert.
Recoils also are available in BSC and BA.

Hello BoschZEV, thank you for your post, i appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experience. Spending a bit more time with the stud, it is Whitworth screws into the head and BSC fixes the nut that goes through the valve inspection cover. i still have a tiny bit of thread purchase, so once winter convenes, i shall effect the repair.
