A 39 UL will be the same.
Need to roughly know your engine number.
*Maybe leave the last two digits off for security*
How many UL's were made in 39?
How many Knuckle's were made in 39?

I just bought a cherry uncut 39 frame today and checked out the seat post area and it was of the early style, but I have an uncut 40 frame also and I will check it out tomorrow. I do not know the serial #s of these machines, but the frames are uncut including the tool box mounts which are different and distinguish the year model.

The 40 frame is tapered so it was a change in 39 or 40. If I was judging a bike I would not give any relevence to it as it does not really matter. I miss the old days when a knucklehead frame was a knucklehead frame and a panhead frame was either straight leg or bowleg and could be had all day for around $100.00.

Sometimes judging is not the key motivation.
Clear concise information serves every one.

Still looking to hear from someone with a late 1939 UL or EL to verify this change. "See information and pictures at the start of this thread.

I have posted this subject on another forum and have been told the reason for the change in shape of these wrap around brackets.
It is for the UL motors. I slipped a set of 40 UL cases in and the area where the crank cases join on the Flatheads has an extra lip "which kind of looks like a pair of puckered lips" that comes within a 1/16" of an inch to the straight wrap around brackets. "see pictures of brackets in question at the start of this thread on the first page"The factory might have tapered these wrap around tangs to give more clearance on the flatty cases. I put a set of 40 Knuckle cases in to check, and they don't come within a bulls roar of the braket.

Pictures of the nether regions of a 65 year old lass.
These are a set of 1940 flatty cases in a 39 frame. The white marker pen is pointing to the area that must have been a bit to close for the factory, prompting a change in shape of the 2 tangs that wrap around the seat post

The knckle cases dont come close because of the different shape at the back of the case

Sorry for the 3 posts. I would have posted all 3 pictures on one page but couldn't figure it out.
