seen this photo a couple times. I think I read a story about the shot some where, but could not find it again. Anyone here know about it and who he is/ was ? We were throwing names around on facebook - but have no idea really. Hell of a shot, I have it up in my barn

Tom, Flathead Judd a friend of Larry Doane's blog was were I first seen it. He also makes the cool period sweaters and flat tracks his flathead at those vintage dirt track races the boy's do in SoCal. Craig Taylor also knows him. He had all the information on that photo. RichDrSprocket

Attached a photo from the photographer who snapped this 1946? Chief in 1949. He was 18 at the time and estimated the rider was about 20 yrs. old.

Come on, who hasn't taken their Indian off road, climbed a hill or two, and did a few jumps? My Chief survived my thrashing it around a motocross track with definite air time at the jumps. With its tractor-like torque, the Chief willingly grunted up hills. I would have been ~2-3 years old when this photo was taken; so, this definitely is not me. Now, I treat my older bikes (like the '48 Chief) with more kindness than I did in the '60s, and I try to use the heavy road machines like they were designed to be used. Even so, I do go off road on the farm and get the bikes dirty every now and then.George Tinkham
