in defense of Facebook

Still see a negative reference to Facebook on occasion, so I can't help but report.
I'm enjoying something on Facebook that I tried to engage here. I like to see photo's and guess the model and year of each bike, and hopefully get feedback on the details that tell you why/what. That's not just for chuckles, it's for my education; I really like learning that stuff. ... I had once offered this in "ideas and suggestions", but the idea fell flat. Maybe I'm the only one playing that "game" on Facebook, but I do get 50% response to my inquiries on details, and it's a pleasure to find that many, many foreign folks are very helpful, and enthusiastic.

As far as all the other "junk" on Facebook, you can avoid it by only "friend"-ing what you want to view. And if an AMCA friend happens to be "junk"-ing you can "block" him, and only view his posts on AMCA page. You can cover a lot of material in brief if you wish. The depth? you'll still have to come here to discuss at length. So if you want to know "why", look for it or ask for it, in the forum.

It has something to do with instant gratification I think. The "like" option lets the poster know that somebody at least saw the post, maybe even agreed with it. It's easy to post photos on FB and get an opinion-right or wrong. Nobody reads the previous comments so you may get 20 or 30 more answers long after the problem was solved. Some of the language makes it unsuitable for young folks...

in fact, i bought my 55FL & 29JD from pictures & ads posted on facebook.

I was the only person that did respond to your (still) excellent idea. I'm always very disappointed with our AMCA membership that squanders this incredible resource; which even our magazine ignores. Obviously there is a lot of latent dislike of this forum among the membership. I have a lot of friends that call me with motorcycle questions, or to bitch about the club. Maybe I should refuse to answer them, and say I will only communicate with them via this forum

yep, I like it - for a quick fix of antique stuff, motorcycles, cars, trucks and a few other things. Also for keeping in touch with old shipmates, very easy to post pics - lot's of junk too, but I view a pretty small group of areas.

Remember that 41four that was apart on there about a month ago? I went and looked at it 6hrs after it came on and my buddy from Illinois drove out 2 days later and picked it up. Everything was there except the cowling for the horn and some other minor part. Other than a crack in the crank which has already been sourced it is in remarkable condition. Turn out is was a factory police bike.

I signed up for Facebook over a year ago, and the first thing I had to do was un-friend my wife.

My password is around here somewhere, but everything seemed more like a nuisance than its worth.
Avoiding the "noise" must be part of the learning curve, and conserving my expensive 'data'.
(I was told FB 'updated' every thirty seconds!)

And yes, an exit strategy is necessary, as I want my hoard sold before I die, not after.
