Remember BMW 6 Harley-Davidson 1931 Rund um Schotten !!!
Hallo Herbert,

It would please me greatly to journey to Munich during Oktoberfest beer time and celebrate Harley-D in Germany with you and your pals!
I just have to remind everyone that Fritz is the man who made that awesome (to me) discovery about a very historic photograph from around 1930. It is the photo of a guy astride a 1930(?) DAR full overhead-valve 45 ci Harley-Davidson road racer. For many years the identity of the guy on that bike eluded and baffled me.
Who was he?
The photo was taken outside the Harley factory. Looks kinda like along Highland Blvd. with the south end of the plant in the background. Wouldn't have been important except that the DAR model was so cool looking with its high mounted chrome straightpipes and "bobber" style fenders and racing handlebars. You can see the entire future bobber/choppper craze foreshadowed in that bike. Who needed California dreaming or LSD? Like Chuck said in his best ad: "Kid, it came from Milwaukee."
But of course that motor was the hot setup. Basically your Sportster engine back in 1930. Part of Harley's vast work with new OHV motors starting with the 21" Single and then thru a series of OHV track racers and hillclimbers in the 1920s and early 30s that ultimately led to the immortal 1936 "61 OHV" Knucklehead!
Fritz was the man who identified the guy on that DAR outside the Harley plant as German racer Paul Weyres. That knocked me over. I never dreamed of that. I had just thought it was a posed shot of some guy they had pulled from the factory, because they commonly did that. But Fritz nailed it. He's got the photo in his nicely produced book: "Harley-Davidson in Deutschland." Maybe on his website too.
Danke Fritz for identifying that photo for us!

Whooo-weee!!! Love that Cleveland racer. Thanks Fritz!
*Note small tube on frame of Cleveland. Nice and light, comp to Hend.
HD had displacement advantage over BMW?
I remember being in Munich for Octoberfest and asking stupidly what they had on tap. It took the waitress 2 min. to crank off the list of house beer on tap. It read like a novel. I did somehow manage to find a few really exceptional ones. Best beer in the world! ~Prost!
