WHO is AL?

I hesitate to use this forum this way, but my curiosity is to blame.
I briefly met a very gracious elder at AMA Vintage Motorycycles days named Al Knapp. He kindly allowed my wife to sit on his vintage HD dirt tracker, gave her a hug, while I snapped the picture. He's out of Algonac Mich. now. Al, if you're reading this you don't get to answer. Anybody have some history on this famous individual? Thanks
