There was a special front pipe with a dimple in it enough for clearance. You can't use a slinky cover with sidecar mounts without cutting into them as well. You can mark the header pipe and take it off your head to put your own dent into it so the lower frame cross bar may clear the pipe. It's only a small dent placed right for clearance. I'm sure this is what you mean by having a difficult time sliding the lower mount across.

As Magic says the front pipe was dimpled to allow the cross tube to fit between the mounts. If you can find an OEM one it will have the dimple. From what I have seen most of the early pipes were dimpled for knuckles and BTSV's. It is the later pans where it starts to go away and definitely by the swing arm pans as the front mount was different. Also as he says you can not use the pipe slinky covers when you have the side car mounted. I don't like them any way so no big deal to me. Are you mounting this on a 1945 year bike or something else and the SC is 45. Also you might want to make sure you have the secondary rear brake rod and clevis and run some wires from the brake switch to the SC if you are going to run it with brakes. The brake rod hooks into the back hole on the brake bell crank at the cross over shaft. I adjust mine so it comes on just a little after the bike brake come on. If you already are aware of this then disregard.
