What have I got?

Just picked this up at a garage sale. It's a 741 Indian with a M741-1 Linkert. No numbers on unaltered vin bosses. Very professional cast iron bell housing with parts for throw out bearing and clutch. Has mount for starter, also has a generator and solenoid. Engine turns over, tiny bit of rust on the edge of one piston as well as valve. What do you think?

It was a professional job, like you said Bob. It seems like there was a 741 powered tractor on one of the forums not too long ago. If it was mine, I'd think about making some kind of Rube Goldberg vehicle with it and have some fun. However, a 741 doesn't pack much of a punch when it comes to horsepower. I had a friend that put Sport Scout wheels, and overbored his cylinders and made a 741 quite respectable.

What are the chances of that being a siren? Could be missing the starter off the top of the bell housing and the clutch lever could bolt up where you think a transmission would typically go.

I would find that so cool if was a siren!

Clutch lever is hanging from bottom of housing.The entire thing is painted grey.

Are you sure it isn't an 841 Shaft drive bell housing?

It is nothing like the 841 set-up. and it's not a 90 degree motor and apparently, if an 841 would be numbered HDA-101 to HDA-1100. It also is not like the arrangement for the 45 Indian motors made for the Eliason Motor Toboggan.
The "siren blades" in the housing may be that or cooling fans. My guess - siren or donkey engine to start something much bigger?

I have found out for sure that it is a prewar Crosley car bell housing. It is set up for a clutch and Borg warner T 92 transmission. The vanes on the flywheel were for a cooling housing on the air cooled Crosley motor.
The mystery continues.

Those pictures are what lead me to a Crosley club and a positive id on the bell housing.

I showed the motor to Charlie Southgate and he is fairly certain that this is one of the motors that his Dad built in the 50's when he built 12 TQ racers that were used in middle TN. I also got a lead on a car with no motor in the same general area. Could I get that lucky?
