Missing from Postal Service: DLX 108 and manifold

Folks,

I sent back a carb and manifold to a repeat customer, without realizing he had moved his address. My fault.

So a priceless restored DLX108 and manifold has been "lost" from the Virginia Beach, VA region, with the serial number upon the manifold flange of 8095778

If anybody tries to sell you this piece, he is a thief.

Since I have been barred or bitched off of nearly every other vintage motorcycle forum, I appreciate anybody who forwards this to those forums. (caimag, etc...)

Tom, we sent out over 63,000 parcels last year. Of that number the post office lost two totaling $31.00 bucks. When I fix a JD front fork for someone, this is how we send it? Think about it? It's irreplaceable. I most likely couldn't find one to replace it with. So how do you send these irreplaceable things. Simple! You put a wall around it. Tell your customer up front that insurance is mandatory and you are not responsible once the courier latches on to it. Get this in writing from your customer before they even send the item to you. Insured for double the value, signature confirmation from an adult. If it's super expensive, send it Fed Ex overnight. It's the customers liability, not yours. Bob L

I think Bob Lulands point is that if this part is so expensive and irreplaceable and if lost is enough to put you out of business then it needs to be sent fully insured and signed for at the other end.

At the end of the day its about managing the risk. If its a $10 part then you might be happy to sent it without insurance or tracking. If its a $10,000 part would you still be happy putting in in the mail and then having no idea where it is or where it ends up?

Even though I shipped it Dec. 29, the Postal Service is still my preference, because it was all my fault.

We will know in a day or two if it was damaged...

At least I had another pristine 108 and manifold to cover it.

That's just one reason why I don't wheel'n'deal.
