The assassination of the Archduke of the Austrian Empire had set all Europe aflame with World War 1 and the German army was headed through Belgium for Paris.
The battle of the Marne followed in early September, the French army being aided in their defensive victory by the first use of motorized transport to move troops to battle (it was a fleet of commandeered Paris taxicabs). It resulted in 4 years of trench warfare, costing millions upon millions of lives.
