  • AMCA Facebook page

So what's the deal with this club's Facebook page? Who started it, who looks after it? I just stopped following it (again) as there are too many junk postings coming from it that have little to do with antique motorcycles. Currently some person decided to link to an article about how loud pipes save lives, and there are several comments on that particular post that are insulting to say the least, there's even an F-bomb or two. Others posters are referring to people who say loud pipes don't help as "pussies" and "too old".

Embarassing to have AMCA associated with such drivel IMHO!

Correct me if I am wrong but if I do remember correctly the AMCA Facebook page was born to hopefully bring some new younger paying members into this club.
My personal opinion and thought is why bother spending money on a club membership which includes a magazine when you can go online and get instant gratification via the facebook page?
Now if you had to be a Club Member to be able to post on the Club facebook page just like you need a membership to post on this forum that would/might bring in some new members? But would it be the younger crowd that is being sought after?
And as mentioned above SOME and I repeat SOME of the things posted by members or non members are a little offensive and nothing we should be proud of as a group. Just my opinion. 46EL

I go there for video stuff. There's some Burt Munro stuff (yesterday) that I got a good kick out of.
Not sure how FB works, but my kids and grandkids are on it, along with Big Base Scouts, and AMCA, all mixed together.
A few risqué things do show up, and I don't know how to fence it off. Political things too, and racist stuff, but you can't have a thin skin about it.
A loud pipes thread might not look so good on us here either, it sounds. Better off there on FB?

Well, I don't know if some of the more stupid comments ("pussies"', "too old", "a**hole", f*ck", etc.) on the AMCA FB page come from AMCA members or not, and I don't really care. My guess is that crap like that originates from people who live the "Facebook Lifestyle", always deferring to their "personal devices" first, human interaction second....the "hey, look at me" crowd. And it's not about being thin skinned, that only insinuates that I'm the one with problem.

I only wish the interesting, old bike stuff that shows up on FB were posted somewhere on this Forum too, where you mostly don't have to put up with the semi-anonymous chest thumpers that have a need to frequently let the world know how they feel and what they know by posting on Facebook.

And again, some of the stuff on the AMCA FB page is an embarassment.

Prior to the club's FB origin this site "enjoyed" some pretty colorful exchanges, stuff that got censored, stuff that did not, but it was stuff that incited some nasty attitudes. It was proof that we're still capable of trash-talk despite our self-perceived maturity. The stuff's bound to back up a sewer somewhere, so again, better off FB's sewer than here.

And yeah, I wish we got more of the good stuff, like that Burt Munro video.

I agree with you Harry. I have an AMCA friend who used to come to this forum, but now goes to FB. He will mention pictures he's seen on FB, and site it as a great resource. I always scold him for neglecting our forum, and also remind him that pictures are not really archived at FB so he would have a difficult time finding a picture he saw 2 months ago. Obviously, he and most FB mavens are cell phone addicts and I doubt if he even uses a PC very often. Probably just for ebay. As for Facebook; I hate it even though all of my friends urge me to be more active on it. Like you, I think FB is a haven for whacked out politicos, predators, and oversexed teenagers. . . . I could go on and on, but I'll save that for Facebook

Agree 100% - As president of a respectable car club, our BOD decided against an official club sponsored FB page due to no control over useless, derogatory, embarrassing, and unrelated posts typical of FB. A club sponsored FB page's content can be a direct reflection of the club itself to those who don't know any better.
As far as using FB to attract new members, we did not feel the trade-off was worth it. Anyone on FB can find an official club website in 10 seconds no matter what hobby they are interested in.

So who's the admin(s) on FB? If they do their job, the insults/trash talk/obscenities can be removed. If they don't want too, I'll take a stab at it.

Our "Bear Mountain Chapter" has a facebook page. We limit posting to members only and have a stiff fine schedule for any abuse. VERY stiff. $50.00 for swearing etc. And we collect.

I kind of like it, it's fast and easy just to git your antique fix. Lot's of cool pictures, just talking motorcycles mainly. Have not seen to much negative stuff. Jim Wear and Buck Carson are running it I believe and I think doing a good job. This site is better quality info and correct info I think. But the face book page is not bad for a quick check on things :-)

I found my Neracar on the AMCA fancybook page. Someone had posted pics from a meet and I commented on one and the bike's owner (not the picture poster) commented that it was for sale. A few emails and phone calls later and off I went to collect it. That is the power of networking.

Facebook shows you if someone has mutual FB friends, so I was able to ask someone I knew in real life about the seller. That was reassuring. I got more photos and even video of the bike running via email. So I wasn't driving halfway across the country with a large wad of cash based merely of the word of imaginary facebook people. I don't often quote Reagan except to "Trust, but verify." on Fancybook as in real life.

There's over 18,000 members on the AMCA FB page, so there will be some fools. Many of the posts are the motorcycle version of "Ooh, shiny!" but for a group that large there is surprisingly little embarrassing content. There are also more specific pages set up for individual makes and my favorite, Motorcycles 1867-1930.

A friend just pointed out to me last night a post on the facebook page asking members on that page to join the AMCA.
And right above that someone drops the F-Bomb when he asking about petcock seals or something.
Real classy, makes a nice impression on all of us. make up some rules about profanity and anyone breaking them are instantly banned from the forum.
It's not like I myself have never used vulgar language but there is a time and place for everything.
Someone in this Club with a little of authority should give this entire mess a second thought.
Garbage like that by what might be a non member or even a member is a reflection of this hobby and it paints a picture that is not pretty.
As far as it being a reflection of what this Club stands for it is an insult to everyone when things like this happen.
Especially the people who give their time freely to do anything and everything to keep the wheels turning in the AMCA.
I have a grandson who is 9 and I would never even point him in the direction of this club if this is how we are portraying ourselves.
So much for bringing some new young blood into this hobby? 46EL

And while i'm on a roll I noticed whoever it is asking for new members to join the AMCA via facebook?
My opinion but why would anyone spend 40 bucks in this day and age to join when you could just go on facebook and get you fill?
                              Someone is not thinking? 46
