  • Exterior oil Filter

I am going to change my oil filter and I would like some advice. I have come up with to part numbers for the canister inside the exterior oil filter. The first one is 63839-53 ( what looks like a modern metal canister with filter inside) and 63840-48a ( what looks like paper or cloth roll).
Questions: Which one is the best for flow, cleaning the oil, and general durability?

My bike is a rider that will never see a judging event, so authenticity is not as important as serviceability.

    Thanks for your attention

Since originality isn't a consideration, why not use one of the aftermarket kits that hang a spin-on oil filter next to the oil tank? I've got two of them, and haven't had any problems. I buy the replacement spin on filters at an H-D dealer.

Thanks for that tip but the old canister is already installed and I like the way it looks. Just looking for which filter seem better or if there is a difference that I should know about
      Thanks again

The -48 number is for the external cannister. The -53 number is for in-tank XLs and FL models.
