  • 2016 Cannonball , The Race of The Century

If anyone is interested in the next Cannonball it has been announced to the previous riders and is now being announced to the public. On Friday,September 9, 2016 100 riders will leave Atlantic City, New Jersey on a 16 day adventure to their ultimate destination, San Diego, California. This event will be an ultimate century race. No motorcycles built after 1916 will be allowed to enter. The route is built for early bikes that can only maintain around 40 miles per hour on straight flat roads. The event is almost full so if you are interested please let me know as soon as possible. jurassicracing@directv.net

Yea, it will be the usual crock of crap. 1916 and down with disc brakes, beaded rims, modified retro-fitted transmissions and clutches, 45 thick spokes and whatever the crowd can come up with. Time for you guys to back up. You want to run this? Then damm well run it right. If the bike didn't come with it from the factory, then it's not allowed. I'm not talking about taking points away at the end but an inspection at the start and if you're found cheating, you're disqualified on the spot. Get this bullshit back to what it was suppose to be. If the man takes on the challenge, make him sweat it all the way across! Bob Luland

I agree with you Bob. I know safety is always brought up, but find a route that will accommodate lousy brakes. Erwin Baker went through a lot more hell than any of these modern riders did, and he did it in 3 days on very little sleep. I hate to see a nice old girl raped by some rich guy who wants a safe, modern motorcycle that looks like an antique.

There wont be any rich guys left once chris christie finds out about it. He'll hit you guys with an entertainment tax, race tax, when you hit pa he'll give you an exit tax, your support staff will need to pay a pay roll tax and a right to work in nj. fee. With all the drunks leaving ac. are you sure you want to start from there?

Couple things I noticed on the last one that some common sense may have avoided:
-Don't start the event in deep sand for the sake of a photo, it sucks when you have to start out pushing the bike.
-Handing papers to the riders at the beginning of each stage.... It generally takes two hands to operate a motorcycle. Put the papers in a Wal-Mart bag that will loop over a mirror or something.

When will the route be posted on the Cannonball web site? I'm curious how close by they will pass.

I agree with Bob 99.9%. I would say that the ONLY upgrade allowed would be better tires and rims. I get where your coming from Bob, and I've been saying the same thing since the Cannonball started. It just seems to me that cross country on the clinchers that are available today seems a little crazy.

                  Right on, Mark!

Make 'em cross the continent on cork carb floats.

Allow me to be the naysayer here...

Even modified, it's no small thing to nurse an old bike across the USA. I was in touch with my buddy Duda (he'es on the forum here) daily during this year's Cannonball. He did it on a '34 VL and it was no easy trek. So I won't denigrate anyone with the nuts to try it... unless I'm on the start line with an unmodified pre-16 bike. And on the finish line.

Yes, I can see that it's not 'pure' if bikes have disks and updated transmissions, etc. That doesn't make it any less difficult, stressful or hardcore. It's 16 days of nursing a machine comparatively long distances with little margin for error. Disk brakes don't make it that much easier on riders who have to endure the trials and tribulations of an XC run.

Good on ya 2016 competitors... You have my respect.

                    Cheers,

                    Sirhr

Spare me! Foam filled clinchers and that's it. Get it back to the basics. You take the challenge on. You do the distance. You blow it because you didn't do your homework. So be it. Make it just the way it would have been in 1920. Bob L

I think it's time some of you boys put your money where your mouth is and show us how it's done. It ain't as easy as ya think and those brake upgrades don't make it any easier. And more than a few of us have run clinchers and lived to tell about it. Ya know what they say about armchair quarterbacks, don't ya?

cut the crap guys. it is not easy putting this thing on. it take time and money. and time is money. the people who put this on get the money to put it on from the riders and sponsors. so i will let the riders and the sponsors and the promotors decide what the rules are. and i will be happy with the reports from the road and the articles about the race. the big motorcycle magazines and main stream press follows this event. it is a positive light on motorcycles. now my opinion, if the rules are changed to be tougher, then only the finest bikes with the most money and spares sunk into them will win. give the riders on a limited budget, leeway to put more available and safer parts on the bikes. maybe an award for the all stock no modifications bikes. maybe we can please everybody. good luck to all the riders happy new year tony

Oh for crying out in the rain. There's nothing in the rules that says you can't run clinchers. Whittle your carb float out of buffalo chips if you want to. Ride your own ride, but ride. Screw the points, it's not about winning. I'm just thankful that someone is putting this thing on so I've got something to do other than watch reality on TV. What else you got that's worth doing?
