During Prohibition, the NYPD found themselves outgunned by the Mob and other bootleggers. Their answer was to outfit their patrolman with automatic shotguns and armored motorcycles. Indian produced 5 such motorcycles with bullet proof shielding to protect rider and passenger. Harley later came out with their own prototype, improving on the original Indian design.
