  • Before There Were Dirt Bikes...

    Before the first true dirt bike hit the trails, these guys were heading off road on their Harleys. Amazing what these guys were doing in the 1950's before adventure riding was even invented. Mud, water, snow and even mountains couldn't slow these guys down. At the time they were riding fairly new motorcycles, imagine someone taking a new Softail off road today...

      Looks to be in central Colorado, judging by the Jefferson county plates.

            I find these photos all over the internet. There are so many different photo sharing and photo archiving sites that you can always find something interesting if you put in the time. Once the photos are found, then I do my best to find historically correct information to describe them. This is often the hardest part since most of these images do not have any information associated with them. I got lucky on this last batch and everything was in one place (as T. Cotten has noted).

            As always I appreciate any corrections to my text. The internet has enough lies on it already...

              I think the guy on the panhead with the cropped front fender may be Johnny Hargrove. He did a lot of thrill show type stuff in the late 40's and into the 50's.
