  • 1909 National Motorcycle Race Meet - Indy

The following is a link to the "First Super Speedway" website that has the story of the "1909 National Motorcycle Race Meet" in Indianapolis at the "new" Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The article was written by Mark Dill.

    http://www.firstsuperspeedway.com/si...s_DeRosier.pdf

Check the link of www.firstsuperspeedway.com for other IMS information including more information about the early motorcycles at the track.

Page 165 of the magazine article mentions the Indianapolis rider Paul Kottlowski of the Indiana Motorcycle Club who won the third race of the meet on a 1909 Minneapolis motorcycle. Mr. Kottlowski's Minneapolis is the fifth (5th) motorcycle from the left in the "start of the race" photo on page 164. His Minneapolis is the one with the silver colored shock absorber on the front wheel. His winning trophy is also on loan by his family to the IMS Museum and is on display next to a restored 1909 Indian.

I was away from home with a very slow laptop when you posted this info Les. The sites just didn't seem to want to load. Anyway, it seems to me that horses and hot air balloons may have been the only racers that appeared before motorcycles at the Indianapolis track. It seems to me that I may have a photo of the first motorsickle race somewhere around here! Thank you for the links. I will be spending some time on them.
