  • Indian Airplane Engine

A lot of early planes were powered by motorcycle engines. In 1911, Indian produced a rotary style motor, specifically for airplane use. The engine still survives to this day and can be seen at the Smithsonian Institute. It is a breathtaking piece of engineering.

Dear Bob, the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola FL also has some breathtaking engineering from Glenn Curtiss. He started as a bicycle racer like George Hendee, then got into motorcycles like Indian, and then into aviation where he stayed. Some of the early cutaway Curtiss radial engines in the museum are awesome.
