  • Are these 28x3 racing tyres? NOS or of recent production?

    Hello AMCA friends,

can anybody tell me if these tyres made my the "UNIVERSAL TIRE CO." "Made in Elizabethtown, Pa, USA" "28x3 4 PLY" were intende for board track racing or for another application?

Have these been reproduced in recent years or are they from the 20ies?

I am looking forward to reading your replies.

    Best wishes from Europe,

Recent production. Universal was started by Ann Kline (not the dingbat fashion designer... the owner of the chocolate company from York, PA area... no, not that chocolate company... Kline Kandies their spinout competitor....). Ann started Universal in the late '60s or early '70s because she couldn't get tires for her cars. They make outstanding tires... many using original molds. Ann was probably America's first woman car collector of 'premiere' status. Her Vintage Bentley collection was, at the time, the best in the world by a long margin. And that was the tip of the iceberg. Her blower Bentley (The Green Goddess) I think just fetched about $5M at Gooding last summer. I was one of the last people to ride with Ann in her 3L Bentley. She was paralyzed in late life and could not use a clutch. Which didn't bother her... once the car was running, she was so good at matching synch speeds, even on a Vintage Bentley 'crash box,' she shifted without using the clutch. Up and down. She just had to have a passenger to get the car started rolling. After that, it was sheer magic to watch her drive.

Ann did nothing half-way. She was a great friend until she passed of Lou Gehrig's disease about 8 years ago.
