  • What is it From ??

01 What is it From !.jpg I have a license plate that I have no idea what it came from. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It came with the basket of parts I got for my 33VL !
    Thanks in advance.

A 1933 California motorcycle plate. It is worthless junk. Send it to me and I will dispose of it properly. Or you could put it on eBay with an opening price of $250.00.

Like I said. Put it on eBay with a $250.00 starting bid, or reserve.

I read your other thread, wherein you are once again asking for confirmation of what you have, there. You seem to have been confused by Chris's lighthearted response.

What you have there is an authentic, near-new, U.S. State of California-issued 1933 motorcycle license plate. They sell, these days for several hundreds of dollars, and Chris was just pullin' yer laig.

California has provisions in their Motor Vehicle Law for registration using "YOM," or "year of manufacture" license plates. There is only a bureaucratic procedure for presenting that plate for inspection at the California tag office for recognition, and having it made the official tag number for your 1933 motorcycle. Happy Motoring!

Thanks Gerry. I figured Chris was just pulling my leg when he said to send it to him and he would dispose of it properly !! Thanks for the info. I'm still not clear just WHAT it came off of. Being a vertical plate, it won't work on my VL sooo, it has been suggested that it might be off of one of the old converted M/C trucks or such. Thanks again for your input. Now I just have to find a buyer for it !!
Also, I'm ready to buy my rim strips, tubes and tires. Any suggestion as to brand of vintage type tires ? After talking to some of the riders on the Cannonball Run, they suggested I NOT get Coker. I have built two Special Construction Harley's but find the restoral of this 33 to be an interesting project. Having fun and can hardly wait to get it running. Thanks again. --------Slick

That is a genuine State of California 1933 motorcycle license plate. All CA motorcycle plates were vertical until 1934 when they became horizontal. But as I said before if you don't want it send it to me and I will dispose of it properly.

Your 33 plate is quite valuable. I looked for years for a 33 Tenn plate to use as a YOM on my 33VC. It is an odd shape as well and the holes in it are too small for bolts. I made a steel plate with bolts and riveted the license to the plate. Good luck with your build. I had a great time on my 33 with a hack.

Check with Universal Tire. I like the Firestone's they offer: https://www.universaltire.com/motorc...ans-black.html

I run Firestones on both my '31 DL and my '27 JD and they have been outstanding.

                      Cheers,

Thanks, Chris. Very interesting. I may just make a plate to fit the tail light license holder so I can run that plate. I have never seen a vert. plate before so was not sure just what it's status was.

                            Thanks Bob,
As I told Chris, I may just do what you did and build a plate to fasten to the bracket which is designed for a horizontal plate. The tail light assembly I have is supposed to be the stock one. I guess Kaleefonia just had to be different ! HA!!---------Slick

Not as different other states that made you have a plate front and rear.
Prior to, I believe, 1914 CA gave you a license number and it was to be painted on the rear fender.
