  • 57 pan front exhaust mount

I am working on a 1957 Panhead bobber. Any chance someone could post a photo of the front exhaust pipe clamp's and where they are mounted to the frame and in what sec quince the two clamps are joined together.
I have gone through Palmers book a few times searching for this information with no luck.

Thanks Chris, I was thinking they went below the sidecar frame mounts.

I think the clamps do go below the s/c forging on a Panhead.

My bad. Panhead does mount below the loops.

            That's alright, Chris,...

Any bobber would have dispensed with them anyway!

So Chris, on my 37 ULH. Above the loop or below? Is that 37 pic a U or Knuckle? Thanks, Bob

Cotton!! Something's gotta help keep the front exhaust pipe from shaking off

I know the 1940 EL model still had the clamp above the sidecar mount. I thought it went below in 1941 but it may have been 1947. Bobjobs of the period still maintained the front pipe in it's stock configuration on till it exited the "s" pipe. Then it was duals or a fancy 2-into-1 tail pipe.

                      Chuck!

If I didn't find clamps on a machine,
I never bothered to install any... because:

If the assembly shakes THAT bad, something else is wrong!

PS: I never ran them on any of my own machines, and quite successfully.
PPS: DOH! I just remembered that I always ran Pan exhausts on my Knucks.

                      Nevermind.

                        Rich,
This makes sence to me in a structural manner, considering that the front pipe is clamped to the head, if there was no other clamp then it gets shoved in the "s" pipe which is bolted to the frame. I would think it would be needed if anything for not putting any undue stress to the "S" pipe.

                          Chuck!

You mean stress to the bracket and bolt, as the S-pipe is quite sturdy itself.

That's still a lot easier to maintain than the front clamps.
The front clamps are great when you have to beat the pipe in for a hack mount,
Yet then,.. they are even harder to get at.

But once they rust up, they stop rattling.

                              Chuck!

The consensus will undoubtedly be that the clamp assembly should be below the hack mount to be "correct".

"Period Modified" judges can call it any way they want.
