  • Insurance question

I am now the owner of a 1930 v and new to the club and vintage bike scene.
I want to insure it. It will be ridden occasionally.
If any of you veteran vintage bike owners could part with any advice on what type insurance coverage, companies to approach or avoid and info like that, I would be appreciate it.

Mine's with the same carrier as my other vehicles, Progressive. Easy, fair price, they sent a guy out to photograph it and verify the numbers.

From what I hear, Hagerty is also a good name, especially for vintage.
Pisten Bully is Harry Roberts in Vermont.

I have a dozen antique bikes insured with Hagerty right now and they are top notch and I recommend them highly. They know the antique market and that is what they do. Agreed to value and no mileage restrictions. For all 12 I pay about $1400 for the year.

As with any insurance policy you have to read coverage you are getting very carefully in order to compare apples to apples and depending on ones specific criteria prices can vary. No matter who you use you want an "Agreed Value" policy. Do not get a stated value policy.
Hagerty and JC Taylor are both highly respected in the collector world. I also used Condon and Skelly for many years on a classic car.

http://www.hagerty.com/Collector-car...rance-overview (note use the classic auto link for an online quote and you can change coverage to adjust after the quote comes up.

When I picked up my 48 Chief I needed coverage fast for the 1000mi trip home on a trailer so called my State Farm Agent. They have antique agreed value policies. I figured I'd switch to one of the specialty collector companies and save money but after getting quotes, surprisingly found none of them could come close to beating State Farms price. I got better coverage for 25% less $$$.......but I have all my other policies with them so am sure that helps. Check with your current insurance company first as they may have an antique policy or may be able to broker one through another company.

Hagerty's the only one I trust. I've never heard a complaint about Hagerty. And no B.S. like inspecting your bike/car (just send um a couple of pics as email attachments). They understand that our old vehicles were made to run, and they're enthusiasts right along side of ya.

John, here in B.C. there are vintage and collector plates available. They reduce the cost immensely but there are stipulations to their use.

I'm in the states and don't know about Canada, but I have a '69 FL with Progressive, liability only, it went up 2 years ago. I'm now paying $75/yr with higher than normal liability coverage. Bob

Vehicle insurance in Canada is by province. In Ontario, motorcycle (and auto) insurance is expensive because the mandatory coverage includes medical, rehabilitation, wage replacement, life insurance, caregiver and disability benefits (all called accident benefits) as well as third-party liability, uninsured motorist and not-at-fault collision.
Mandatory coverage ($1,000,000 liability), accident benefits (see above) uninsured motorist, family protection endorsement, not-at-fault collision, and fire, comprehensive and theft insurance ($500 deductible) to an agreed value) on my old bikes (30 years old or older) is about half the premium of the same engine size of motorcycle for the mandatory only (no fire, comprehensive or theft coverage) regular rate coverage.
