Found some more photos of the Daytona 200 race in 1948 from TIME Magazine. Sounds like one hell of a race.

It was, as usual, a poorly run AMA race. Billy Mathews (Norton) even after a fire at a pit stop, finished first. However, the lap counters conveniently screwed up and called Emde first. It was protested and debated for some hours and finally Mathews, who always needed money, and Emde agreed to split the combined 1st and 2nd place money 50/50 - but Emde was then listed as the "winner".

    So much for history.
