  • Laughin Indian Rider/ O'Keefe Rally and Races

Well, I spent the better part of a week out running around on my '48 FL. I put on some decent miles and rode through torrential rain storms as well as blazing hot sunny days. The Panhead gave me a little grief but in the end decided to mellow out and ran like a dream.
The Laughing Indian Riders held a road run in the Okanagan region of British Columbia and those shiney Indians were put to use!!! There were folks from the Canadian Provinces of Alberta and B.C. and some of our neighbors from Washington and Idaho showed up as well. It was a great road run and fun was had by all. Two of us rode Harleys and only received a good natured ribbing for doing so. I find that the evenings are some of the better times with all the stories and yarns being spun late into the night. I came home exhausted but it's a good kind of tired. I have to go back to work tomorrow but if I had my way I would saddle up and head off for another gathering somewhere.

After the road run there was a vintage rally at the O'Keefe Ranch in Vernon, B.C. It's a perfect spot for an old bike event and has a flattrack for the folks who want to go fast. It's a nice laid back event and I find myself drawn that way this time of year.

I didn't take as many photos as a usually do but here are few shots.

Here's a small group of us waiting for the second wave to catch up....

Here's a group of us parked outside the Kettle Valley Railway station. It has a steam engine from 1916 that's hooked up to some passenger cars and will take you on a trip through the past.

A cool little '43 WLC waiting patiently to be taken for a ride.

This bike belonged to Walt Healy. He was the Indian dealer for Calgary, Alberta for many years and it ain't no stock Sport Scout!!!

Dig this racer.... I'm guessing some folks won't approve!!!!

    A tasty '46 UL...

    A freshly finished '47 UL....

This '36 Chief was a deeper red than the picture shows and man was it clean!!!!

A group of young fellas showed up from the Vancouver area on customs. I talked with a few of them and they screamed their enthusiasm for old bikes. Some of them even had restorations on the go!!!

Very cool Cory, well done- sounds like some great riding. Very nice machines and it looks like really nice country for riding. Some of the best rides I have ever had were like that/ heavy rain, then blazin sun :-) thanks for sharing.

Tom!!! The rain was brutal last Thursday. It got to the point that a few riders dropped out and called it a day. There was so much rain falling that visibility was next to nothing and because we were "cool" bikers almost nobody brought rain gear. I was so wet that I stopped on the way back to camp and bought a cheap pair of running shoes so that I would have something dry to put on my feet!!! The Indian distributors didn't care for the water volume and a few dropped off to the side of the road to dry out. One fella on a '48 Chief pulled off to the shoulder beside me and I stopped to see what the matter was. His distributor had taken on water but after we sought shelter and dried it out it was back on the road again!!! We ended up finishing off the ride by ourselves and it was kind of cool having a '48 Indian and Harley cruising down the road together. The back roads in this area are amazing and I wish I had some kind of camera that was manageable while riding so I could have shared some of the awesome views!!

          Great Stuff Cory!
Thanks for the pictures, and the report. Was that a Scout engine stuffed in that HD racer? Anything to make it go I presume?
          Thanks, RF.

Great pictures Cory. You sure live a beautiful part of the world, and it looks particularly good for riding. It's always great to see a large gathering of Indians. . . . but where is your 1948FL ?

You nailed it RF!!! It's an H-D/Indian 45 hybrid. The fella who owns it has several bikes and most of them are in some way cross bred!!!

Glad to hear you liked the pics Eric. After I got home though I wished I had taken more. The ride took place in the south central part of B.C., roughly 250 miles from my place. You are right about the good riding. There are tons of back roads and plenty of directions to go. My bike is camouflaged behind the white 45 just below the second #39 Sport Scout racer pic.

Oh yeah Cory, now I see it. I also see that your '48 is in an all Harley group. Was that by choice, or did the Indian guys request that you find your own parking? You must have a good work ethic Cory, because you got that Panhead road worthy in short order. I guess with scenery and weather like you have, getting a bike ready for summer is a high priority.

Eric, the theme of the rally was Indian and the organizers at the venue wanted all the Indians together and split the other marques up by country of origin. As far as work ethic goes, I don't know about that but it was mentioned by gary.h on one of his visits that I could possibly have a problem and an intervention could be in the cards!!! I was completely consumed by this bike and spent every spare minute for the better part of a couple months working on the old beast. It's far from perfect and still needs some wrongs righted but it's roadworthy. There were other bikes that I could have ridden but I just had to have the pan running for this event. The scenery is nice for sure and we only have a couple months worth of decent riding weather so you are right in thinking that it's an incentive to get going!!!

I've got some tales for you the next time we run into each other. It was a blast for sure!!! The pan did give me some grief and it wasn't all roses but all in all the crappiest day on the road is still better than work!!!
