    • #584 Tuman & Hill told me the story of that race. So hot that Tuman would lose 25-30 lbs & take 6 weeks to recover. Watching his friend a few feet ahead disappear off the track. When they checked his temp it was 108. They couldn't bring it down & he died. As Tuman told me the story, he began to shake violently. Bobby grabbed him & held him till he calmed down. Then Tuman finished telling me the story. This was the race that ended Tuman's racing career. He said it wasn't watching his friend die, that happened a lot. It was the beating he took each time they raced at Dodge City. Miss those guys !

        • Ernie Beckman was friends with a machinist in Des Moines. Beckman told him how to build a Little Base Indian Racer. 1952,He rode it a few years & it sat a few. He gave it to a young guy who raced 2 more years. After a few hands my brother bought it in 1961. Smitty & Red Fields behind Smitty's shop with my brother's Little Base. Smitty & Red Fields 2003.jpg

          • I love the old racing history. Hey Duffy, what ever happened to 'Little Base'?

                  • JoJo, As far as I know it is still in the back of my brother's '32. It was only run at Sturgis 75th. Jim Wall did an on the fly tune & he rode it & Brittany Olson rode Jim's for a demonstration race on the old track. Jim said it was faster than his bike but it is a short track setup & Jim's is long track.
