  • Isn't this the same girl in both photos wearing almost the exactly same outfit? Which I personally find quaint and fashionable for the day. This (girl pouring) photo I originally identified as Lillian Hauerwas, but later I obtained the other girl-on-bike photo from the Harley family that identified the girl rider as Crystal Haydel. They look and are dressed so similar that I wondered if the girl pouring photo might be Crystal Haydel too and not Hauerwas. But the one you posted identifies that one as Lillian Hauerwas. It's one of the other -- or possibly both. [/QUOTE]

It has to be Lillian Hauerwas in both pictures. Picture #1. i posted, was from the Harley-Davidson Motor Company Archives. I seriously doubt that Harley-Davidson would have made a mistake identifying her as the rider/poser! The 2nd picture Eric posted. It is the exact outfit, right down to the pins on her left lapel area, and her bow on her hat, plus the puttees. There would be a Massive Cat fight, if they were two different women wearing the same Out-FIT. Hahaha. *Besides, isn't that a 1917 JD Lillian is standing next to? Look at the front cylinder, the plug is laying on the right floorboard, and my guess is that Lillian is ready to pour some H-D Lubricant to prime the chamber.

**Here is a dandy article about Lillian Hauerwas.

    • I think you're right on every count, JoJo. Same clothes, and no doubt the same girl. I said 1916 because the photo indicates a lighter color (H-D Gray) which always looks lighter than the Drab Green color that started in 1917. However, early '17s were also Gray, but I think it's just the lighting of the photograph that makes it look lighter just like Lillian's clothes are lighter than in the photo above. Finally, I was looking for tell-tale signs of a 1916 when I noticed the lower pic shows full intake pushrod covers that started in 1917. You have a good eye for details JoJo

Was contacted from a member in northern OH. I traded him the seat T for a HD tow bar. We were both happy with the trade, him an Indian guy and me HD with no personal use for either of the parts. His daughter lived close to me, so she handled the trade. This year at Wauseon I got to talking to a guy about parts and crap and low and behold I met the guy. We both discussed the deal and his daughters' residence. Life is cool!

I hate to judge women's weight, but I think in #4592 the weight capacity might have been exceeded. But hey, I wouldn't complain!
Cool story Bob. I just love those twist of fate experiences.

              • Nice Donald Duck front bumper, nice tall bracket spots, nice what looks to be Flander's bars. Ya think she might wanna spring for a new front tire?

                • Looking at the headlights, those are different bikes so the lower pic could be an early '17J . The gear cover is also '17 or later on lower pic

                      • Google agrees with you JoJo:
                        Entered Search Term: "Lillian Hauerwas"
                        Selected "Images" option and
Photos in post #4606 both are presented along with this one titles "Lillian Hauerwas and Ernestine Langenberg"

                        • Found this photo at the Sauk County Historical Society this week. Now what kind of fish is that? Near Baraboo is the Wisconsin river, the Baraboo river and Devils Lake. They are probably heading for the tavern to have a beer. Photo taken downtown Baraboo.

Baraboo, Wi. jpg.jpg Hey guys, what year bike is that?

The fish appear to be bass and the bike is a 1915. If they're headed to the tavern perhaps they ended up at Luther Saloon. My 2x great grandfather's company A. Lange Mfg. located at 32nd and Vliet in Milwaukee manufactured the back bar, coolers and pub tables used at Luther, this equipment is still in use today at what is now Square Tavern in Baraboo.

                            • To help clear up the confusion on the identities of Crystal Haydel and Lillian Hauerwas below is a photo of both women together. Ms. Haydel on the left wore eye glasses and was 8 years older than Ms. Hauerwas pictured on the right. All of the photos recently posted above have been of Ms. Hauerwas and she was measuring out carbon remover in the photo taken at the H-D factory garage.

                              • Thanks for the information, and a great picture, Badger34. In every sense, a photograph is a window on the past, and keeps the people in those pictures alive.
