So M.A.D., did Earl Robinson ever talk to you about racing speedway at U of D Titan Stadium in the 30's?

My grandfather and his cousin both raced class b on the cinders in Milwaukee in 1934-35 with an OHV Peashooter that they owned. All part of a circuit at that time that included competition between the cities of Chicago, Detroit and Milwaukee.

No Badger, it never came up, i wish it did! In fact, i haven't heard about this until You mentioned it & i follow the sPeEdWaY scene intensely. There was Midget racing at U. Of D. Titan Stadium~no jokes please--haha. Reminds me of when Marlyn 'Thunder' Klunder told me he promoted a short lived series of Speedway Racing at the old Minnesota Twins Metropolitan Stadium, back in the late 1970's. All the giant players in speedway, and no one had even heard of it. Until one day, long ago at Buzz & Pixie's swap in Monroe, Michigan. I brought one of my sPeEdWaY motorcycles to the swap, and out of the blue, a guy that used to live in Minnesota, saw the Jawa, and started talking about how he used to go to the Twins Stadium to watch Speedway Motorcycle racing~Funny sTuFF, you just never know.

The series really only lasted one good solid year, 1934. It was mostly contested between just Chicago & Milwaukee, I think Detroit may have only pulled off 1 race meet in 1934 after having 2 race meets in 1933. Earl Robinson was the main event winner in one of the 1933 races at Titan Stadium. The promoters were the Seward brothers who I believe were west coast based and operated under Night Speedways, Inc. Milwaukee was the only city to re-emerge in 1935 with a racing program but the Seward's pulled up stakes in early July for better odds in Toronto. Bill Knuth came to the rescue for the remainder of the 1935 race program in Milwaukee. Some of the best West Coast racers and a couple from outside the country competed, names like Mutt Kelly, Mark Porter, Cliff Hills, Jimmie Gibb, Eric Chitty, Ray Grant and local Johnny Spiegelhoff ran well with a Crocker.

My g'pa Joe and his cousin Joe were both Milwaukee Motorcycle Club members and both hired into the H-D Juneau Ave factory in 1934. The sought after machine for the class B racers was the OHV Peashooter. They were lucky to get their hands on one and housed & rebuilt it in my g'pa's garage, they then took turns racing it in 1934-35. 1934 was a big year for my g'pa Joe as he also won the Milw MC's big endurance contest of the year, The Badger Derby. Earl Robinson placed second and both were riding H-D 21 c.i. side valves in the event.

Vintage Pic of the Day - October 8, 2022
