1951. Well... maybe not literally, but one theory is that it was Brando in 'Streetcar' that started the T-shirt trend.
(And a booster 'Schott' for leather jackets sales a couple years later)

Isn't that irony? Well there's this guy in my community a bit older than I and he would sometimes pair with Link Wray as his lead guitarist. Turns out Robert Gordon also has a nice Pan Head and while this song is about the rails and not antique motorcycles it is on the right track.

As far as T-shirts themselves, Folks,...

They stopped being just underwear after WWII. Motorcycle shops had always sold riding apparel, but when did T-shirts become more than something with sleeves you could roll up to hold a pack of cigarettes?

When did they become motorcycle advertising?

I like to try and figure out the year of early J Harleys. I think this bike is a 1919, or 1920. Clues are the early exposed springs seat (cushion spring cans in '21) , tall spring fork tubes (1920, I think), full rear fender without a separate rear section or hinged section. Early Js are so interesting because there were so many changes, and improvements. Still my favorite Harley-Davidsons.
