In #3470 it looks like the Detroit Police are riding 1934 VLs for their 1940 show. The picture at bottom right has been reversed.

Not a vintage photo, today I'm reminiscing back to Monday Sept 20th 1948. 75 years ago today my grandfather along with other H-D factory experimental department men departed Milwaukee on what would be a 17 day, 5002 mile testing trip. The following map shows a southerly route taken on the way down and northerly return. I know details of this trip because I have a 3" x 5" spiral note book (inset photo) in which my g'pa recorded things like fuel and oil consumption, oil changes, dealerships visited, lodging locations & fees, daily mileage and hours on the road.

WOWOWOWWOW!!! what a heritage passed forward that you have in your gpa's journal !

That's wonderful. Possibly next time the AMCA is offering to scan documents at a meet to put in the AMCA library maybe you could share. I for one would love to read it. Had to have been Rt 66 out?

Now if Steve could just post more 'cone" photos we would all have a better day!

I believe the model is Honor Blackman, famous as Ms. Galore in the James Bond film, 'Goldfinger'. Her screen name didn't help her career in spite of being a very good actress. The motorbike is a Velo Solex from France. I found one here in Sarasota at a yard sale and eventually found the (Solex only) new front tire which is critical to making it move. A grooved drive on the motor, via lever is what contacts the tire and make the bike move.

Dick-pem, Is the above photo of Merlin Dohrman part of your Werner-Hartford/Slinger collection? You must have shared it a while back and I grabbed it at that time. What I liked discovering about Merlin is that he was a race fan, his obit mentions he was a flagman at Beaver Dam Raceway Park and other race tracks for many years. I also located info that he was elected president of the Beaver MC for 1939.

Yes it is. I spent many days tracking down families and such to obtain these photos The first motorcycle race I remember attending was at the Dodge County fairgrounds 1/2 mile dirt track. Sometime in the late 60's I believe. I won't forget it as they had a flagman on the outside of the track just entering turn 1 standing on the track in front of the fence. A race bike came by the grandstands with a throttle stuck wide open and the racer bailed off. The bike continued and struck the flagman sending him over the fence. I'll never forget seeing his boots still on the track where he was standing. He didn't make it. Another time a racer lost control heading into turn one and he hit the fence and went cartwheeling along with his bike through the trees. I mean he was 20ft in the air. Never found out what happened to him. Later that day there were some cycle gangs who got out of control and a member did a wheelie and lost it into the crowd behind the grandstand and hit a woman. Broken leg. Not good! I think that ended the races for a while.

We had a Sheriff in Dodge County at the time who was not afraid of anything. Old school WWII veteran. The stuff he did was incredible if you would hear it today. After the races the cycle gangs stopped in a tavern not to far from the track. They were causing problems and the Sheriff was called. The Sheriff showed up with deputies and detectives. The Sheriff walked in and asked who was leader of the gang. He was told who it was and the Sheriff drew his gun and walked over the the leader and stuck the gun to his head and advised that they were leaving now. And they did!

Nice photo above, I guess there's no info to go along with it so that could be any county fairgrounds in the country. Newest cycle in that lineup to me appears to be a '33.

I've snagged that pic a few times, Badger!

No clues, but the gal fourth from the left might have a nose bandage.
